| 1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
| 3 | to learn of the death of Jerome R. "Jerry" Butler Jr. of | ||||||
| 4 | Chicago, former City of Chicago Architect and Public Works | ||||||
| 5 | Commissioner, who passed away on December 2, 2021; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Jerome Butler was born on September 6, 1928; he | ||||||
| 7 | graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1952, | ||||||
| 8 | studying at the old University of Illinois Navy Pier campus | ||||||
| 9 | for his first two years of undergraduate education; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Jerome Butler joined Chicago city government in | ||||||
| 11 | 1960; he was appointed as city architect by Mayor Richard J. | ||||||
| 12 | Daley in 1967; beginning in 1974, he help led the restoration | ||||||
| 13 | of the Navy Pier auditorium at the east end of Navy Pier, which | ||||||
| 14 | involved a full restoration of the auditorium and the addition | ||||||
| 15 | of a promenade on the north side of the pier and a solar energy | ||||||
| 16 | project to heat the buildings on the pier's east end; he was | ||||||
| 17 | also involved with the further redevelopment of Navy Pier | ||||||
| 18 | before it reopened in 1995, which included the addition of the | ||||||
| 19 | familiar Family Pavilion, Crystal Gardens, carousel, and first | ||||||
| 20 | Ferris wheel; he was appointed as Commissioner of the Chicago | ||||||
| 21 | Department of Public Works in 1979 by Mayor Jane Byrne; later, | ||||||
| 22 | he served a short term as commissioner of the Chicago | ||||||
| 23 | Department of Aviation under Mayor Harold Washington; and
| ||||||

| 1 | WHEREAS, Jerome Butler won the American Institute of | ||||||
| 2 | Architects Design Excellence Award for the Navy Pier project; | ||||||
| 3 | and
| ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, Jerome Butler was preceded in death by his wife, | ||||||
| 5 | Marianne (Falvey) Butler; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Jerome Butler is survived by his children, Ellyn | ||||||
| 7 | (Robert) Berninger, Carolyn Butler, and Mark (Mary) Butler; | ||||||
| 8 | his grandchildren, Megan (Michael) and Patricia (Joshua); his | ||||||
| 9 | great-grandchildren, Matthew and Eliza; and his extended | ||||||
| 10 | family and friends; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 11 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | ||||||
| 12 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 13 | Jerome R. "Jerry" Butler Jr. and extend our sincere | ||||||
| 14 | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
| 15 | him; and be it further
| ||||||
| 16 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 17 | presented to the family of Jerome Butler as an expression of | ||||||
| 18 | our deepest sympathy.
