2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Jerry Howard Haapanen, who passed away on | ||||||
4 | July 9, 2017; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Jerry Haapanen was born in Finlayson, Minnesota to | ||||||
6 | Verner "Ben" and Irene (Sironen) Haapanen on August 17, 1944; | ||||||
7 | he received his associate's degree from Finlandia University in | ||||||
8 | Hancock, Michigan; he then studied printing management and | ||||||
9 | printing education at South Dakota State University, where he | ||||||
10 | earned two bachelor's degrees; he received his Master of | ||||||
11 | Science in Education from Roosevelt University; he married | ||||||
12 | Kathrine Ecola on July 1, 1967; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Jerry Haapanen worked at West High School in | ||||||
14 | Waukegan from 1968-1981; he taught printing and night school, | ||||||
15 | supervised summer printing, and was the yearbook advisor; in | ||||||
16 | 1979, he started a typesetting business which grew into | ||||||
17 | Haapanen Brothers Inc.; he was involved with the company until | ||||||
18 | his death; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Jerry Haapanen was a member of the North Shore | ||||||
20 | Craftsman Club, where he served a term as president; he was a | ||||||
21 | board member of the Great Lakes Graphic Arts Association; he | ||||||
22 | was an active member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church (ELCA), |

1 | where he served on the finance committee and as chairman of the | ||||||
2 | relocation and building committees; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Jerry Haapanen was preceded in death by his | ||||||
4 | parents; his sister, Beatrice "Bea" Haapanen, followed him in | ||||||
5 | death; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Jerry Haapanen is survived by his wife of 50 | ||||||
7 | years, Kathrine; his sons Jonathan (Sarah) Haapanen and Matthew | ||||||
8 | (Megan) Haapanen; his daughter, Rebecca Haapanen; his | ||||||
9 | grandchildren, Ben, Kate, Levi, Reina, and Colin; his brother, | ||||||
10 | Rick (Lindy) Haapanen; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; | ||||||
11 | therefore, be it

12 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
13 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
14 | Jerry Howard Haapanen, and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
15 | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
16 | further

17 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
18 | presented to the family of Jerry Haapanen as an expression of | ||||||
19 | our deepest sympathy.
