SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Jerry Howard Haapanen, who passed away on
4July 9, 2017; and
5 WHEREAS, Jerry Haapanen was born in Finlayson, Minnesota to
6Verner "Ben" and Irene (Sironen) Haapanen on August 17, 1944;
7he received his associate's degree from Finlandia University in
8Hancock, Michigan; he then studied printing management and
9printing education at South Dakota State University, where he
10earned two bachelor's degrees; he received his Master of
11Science in Education from Roosevelt University; he married
12Kathrine Ecola on July 1, 1967; and
13 WHEREAS, Jerry Haapanen worked at West High School in
14Waukegan from 1968-1981; he taught printing and night school,
15supervised summer printing, and was the yearbook advisor; in
161979, he started a typesetting business which grew into
17Haapanen Brothers Inc.; he was involved with the company until
18his death; and
19 WHEREAS, Jerry Haapanen was a member of the North Shore
20Craftsman Club, where he served a term as president; he was a
21board member of the Great Lakes Graphic Arts Association; he
22was an active member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church (ELCA),

1where he served on the finance committee and as chairman of the
2relocation and building committees; and
3 WHEREAS, Jerry Haapanen was preceded in death by his
4parents; his sister, Beatrice "Bea" Haapanen, followed him in
5death; and
6 WHEREAS, Jerry Haapanen is survived by his wife of 50
7years, Kathrine; his sons Jonathan (Sarah) Haapanen and Matthew
8(Megan) Haapanen; his daughter, Rebecca Haapanen; his
9grandchildren, Ben, Kate, Levi, Reina, and Colin; his brother,
10Rick (Lindy) Haapanen; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins;
11therefore, be it
12 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14Jerry Howard Haapanen, and extend our sincere condolences to
15his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
16further
17 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Jerry Haapanen as an expression of
19our deepest sympathy.
