SENATE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
learn of the death of Jerry Howard Haapanen, who passed away on
July 9, 2017; and
WHEREAS, Jerry Haapanen was born in Finlayson, Minnesota to
Verner "Ben" and Irene (Sironen) Haapanen on August 17, 1944;
he received his associate's degree from Finlandia University in
Hancock, Michigan; he then studied printing management and
printing education at South Dakota State University, where he
earned two bachelor's degrees; he received his Master of
Science in Education from Roosevelt University; he married
Kathrine Ecola on July 1, 1967; and
WHEREAS, Jerry Haapanen worked at West High School in
Waukegan from 1968-1981; he taught printing and night school,
supervised summer printing, and was the yearbook advisor; in
1979, he started a typesetting business which grew into
Haapanen Brothers Inc.; he was involved with the company until
his death; and
WHEREAS, Jerry Haapanen was a member of the North Shore
Craftsman Club, where he served a term as president; he was a
board member of the Great Lakes Graphic Arts Association; he
was an active member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church (ELCA),

where he served on the finance committee and as chairman of the
relocation and building committees; and
WHEREAS, Jerry Haapanen was preceded in death by his
parents; his sister, Beatrice "Bea" Haapanen, followed him in
death; and
WHEREAS, Jerry Haapanen is survived by his wife of 50
years, Kathrine; his sons Jonathan (Sarah) Haapanen and Matthew
(Megan) Haapanen; his daughter, Rebecca Haapanen; his
grandchildren, Ben, Kate, Levi, Reina, and Colin; his brother,
Rick (Lindy) Haapanen; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins;
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
Jerry Howard Haapanen, and extend our sincere condolences to
his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
presented to the family of Jerry Haapanen as an expression of
our deepest sympathy.
