2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Bruce Alexander Campbell II of Tucson, | ||||||
4 | Arizona, formerly of Springfield, who passed away on March 7, | ||||||
5 | 2024; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Bruce Campbell was born to Joseph Bruce and Ruth | ||||||
7 | Norcom Campbell in Chicago on October 19, 1929; he and his | ||||||
8 | family moved to Nashville, Illinois in 1933; he graduated from | ||||||
9 | Western Military Academy in Alton and the University of | ||||||
10 | Illinois in 1951, where he served as president of Sigma Alpha | ||||||
11 | Epsilon and belonged to the honorary journalism fraternity, | ||||||
12 | Sigma Delta Chi; he served in the U.S. Army until June 1953 and | ||||||
13 | was stationed in Korea for one year; he married Alice Jean | ||||||
14 | Keller in Paris, Illinois on July 25, 1953; and

15 | WHEREAS, Bruce Campbell began his career at General | ||||||
16 | American Life Insurance Company in St. Louis in 1953, | ||||||
17 | transferring to the Chicago office after one year; he joined | ||||||
18 | Illinois Bell Telephone Company in Peoria in 1955, later | ||||||
19 | working in the Chicago, New York, and Springfield offices; he | ||||||
20 | created Illinois Bell's economic development organization in | ||||||
21 | 1978, which was adopted by most of its companies across the | ||||||
22 | country; he retired as director of economic development from | ||||||
23 | Illinois Bell, then known as Ameritech, with offices in |

1 | Springfield and Chicago; and

2 | WHEREAS, During his career, Bruce Campbell led several | ||||||
3 | business organizations, including the Sangamon County Economic | ||||||
4 | Council, the Illinois Development Council, and the Mid America | ||||||
5 | Economic Council; he also served as a member of the private | ||||||
6 | sector board to the Illinois Department of Commerce and | ||||||
7 | Community Affairs, and he belonged to the Belleville Elks | ||||||
8 | Lodge, the Sangamo Club, and Illini Country Club; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Bruce Campbell and his family resided in | ||||||
10 | Springfield for 30-plus years, where he was very active in | ||||||
11 | community affairs, including serving as president of the | ||||||
12 | Springfield Boys and Girls Clubs, the Sangamon State | ||||||
13 | University Foundation, and the Sangamon County University of | ||||||
14 | Illinois Alumni Association; he founded and was the first | ||||||
15 | president of the Central Illinois Public Relations Society, | ||||||
16 | and he served as the public relations director of the 1973 and | ||||||
17 | 1982 United Way of Sangamon County campaigns; he served on the | ||||||
18 | board of directors of the Springfield Library, the Springfield | ||||||
19 | Symphony Orchestra, Memorial Medical Center, the Dana Thomas | ||||||
20 | House Foundation, and the University of Illinois National | ||||||
21 | Alumni Association; he was a member of the American Business | ||||||
22 | Club, the Capitol Bicentennial Commission, and Westminster | ||||||
23 | Presbyterian Church, where he served as both a deacon and an | ||||||
24 | elder; and

1 | WHEREAS, Bruce Campbell loved history, traveling, and | ||||||
2 | spending time with family and friends; he researched, wrote, | ||||||
3 | and published Sangamon Saga, a 365-page hardcover pictorial | ||||||
4 | history of Sangamon County; he also researched and recorded | ||||||
5 | his family genealogy, and he chronicled his many journeys | ||||||
6 | across the globe; he enjoyed entertaining, maintaining | ||||||
7 | lifelong friendships, and making new friends; he especially | ||||||
8 | enjoyed vacationing with his family in San Diego, California, | ||||||
9 | Old Mission, Michigan, and Mexico; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, After retirement, Bruce Campbell and his wife, | ||||||
11 | Alice, split their time between Springfield and Tucson, later | ||||||
12 | making Tucson their permanent home; while there, he became an | ||||||
13 | active volunteer at both Tucson Memorial Center and Northwest | ||||||
14 | Hospital, and he was a member of St. Michael Episcopal Church | ||||||
15 | and Skyline Country Club; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Bruce Campbell was preceded in death by his son, | ||||||
17 | Bruce A. Campbell III; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Bruce Campbell is survived by his wife; his | ||||||
19 | children, Cynthia (Morris) McWilliams, Craig Campbell, and Tom | ||||||
20 | Campbell; his daughter-in-law, Jean; and his grandchildren, | ||||||
21 | Allison McWilliams, Melissa Campbell, Andrew Campbell, and | ||||||
22 | Michael Campbell; therefore, be it
