| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of
George R. Arnold of Edwardsville, who | ||||||
| 4 | passed away on May 14, 2010; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, George Arnold was born September 11, 1916, in | ||||||
| 6 | Carbondale; he was the son of the late William Edward and | ||||||
| 7 | Elizabeth H., nee Scott, Arnold; he married Mildred Caviness on | ||||||
| 8 | December 22, 1956, in Pinckneyville; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, George Arnold was a veteran of the U.S. Navy | ||||||
| 10 | during World War II; he became an Ensign at the Great Lakes | ||||||
| 11 | Naval Training Station in 1942; he served as an instructor of | ||||||
| 12 | physics, navigation, and meteorology for the naval cadets in | ||||||
| 13 | Glenview Naval Air Station in Glenview; he then received 12 | ||||||
| 14 | months of instruction in Aerology in Annapolis, Maryland in | ||||||
| 15 | 1943 and 1944; he was then assigned to the Naval Station in the | ||||||
| 16 | Port of Spain at Trinidad, West Indies; from 1945 to 1946, he | ||||||
| 17 | served as an instructor at the naval air station in Corpus | ||||||
| 18 | Christie, Texas; after his service in the military, he was a | ||||||
| 19 | partner in Arnold Orchards in Carbondale, specializing in | ||||||
| 20 | apples and peaches; and
| ||||||
| 21 | WHEREAS, George Arnold retired as a professor of physics | ||||||
| 22 | and environmental science after 10 years at SIU-Carbondale and | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | 17 years at SIU-Edwardsville; he received his bachelor's degree | ||||||
| 2 | in education, physics, and mathematics from SIU-Carbondale in | ||||||
| 3 | 1939; he then received his master's degree in physics from the | ||||||
| 4 | University of Illinois in 1940 and his doctor of science degree | ||||||
| 5 | in environmental science from Washington University; he was the | ||||||
| 6 | first person to receive a doctorate on air pollution from | ||||||
| 7 | Washington University; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, George Arnold was an active member in many | ||||||
| 9 | organizations; he served as president of the Lewis & Clark | ||||||
| 10 | Society, acting president of MCCA, executive secretary of | ||||||
| 11 | IMRPAC, chairman of the Illinois Corridor, co-chair of the | ||||||
| 12 | Illinois-Missouri Trails Coalition, archivist for the | ||||||
| 13 | Marquette-Joliet Tercentennial, chairman of the Piasa | ||||||
| 14 | Palisades Sierra Group, president of the Vadalabene Nature | ||||||
| 15 | Trail Volunteers, secretary of the Grassroots Trailnet | ||||||
| 16 | Committee, member of the Mississippi River Corridor Study | ||||||
| 17 | Commission, and a member of the MRPC; and
| ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, George Arnold was the recipient of the | ||||||
| 19 | Edwardsville Meritorious Service Award in 1959; in 2000, he was | ||||||
| 20 | honored by the Madison County Transit for the role he played to | ||||||
| 21 | pave the way for a world-class bikeway system in Madison | ||||||
| 22 | County; in 1970, George, along with the help of Senator Sam | ||||||
| 23 | Vadalabene, introduced legislation for creating bikeways | ||||||
| 24 | throughout the State of Illinois; in 1986, he promoted Wood | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | River as the number one site of the National Lewis and Clark | ||||||
| 2 | Trail as a member of the Lewis and Clark Society; he, along | ||||||
| 3 | with Congressman Jerry Costello and Governor Jim Edgar, helped | ||||||
| 4 | obtain 7 million dollars for the construction of the new Lewis & | ||||||
| 5 | Clark Bicentennial Interpretive Center, which had 185,000 | ||||||
| 6 | visitors during its 1st year; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, George Arnold was preceded in death by his wife | ||||||
| 8 | and his brothers, Clyde Arnold, Clarence Arnold, and Ralph | ||||||
| 9 | Arnold; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, George Arnold is survived by his sister, Marian | ||||||
| 11 | Calnon, and his many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 12 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 13 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
| 14 | his family and friends, the passing of George R. Arnold; and be | ||||||
| 15 | it further
| ||||||
| 16 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 17 | presented to the family of George Arnold as an expression of | ||||||
| 18 | our sympathy.
