Bill Title: Urges employers throughout the State of Illinois to recognize the importance of Veterans Day and allow our veterans the opportunity, if they so choose, to participate in Veterans Day ceremonies or to take time off as gratitude for their service.

| 1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, World War I officially ended when the Treaty of | ||||||
| 3 | Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919; and
| ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, The fighting in World War I ceased when an | ||||||
| 5 | armistice went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh | ||||||
| 6 | day of the eleventh month; therefore, November 11, 1918 is | ||||||
| 7 | regarded as the end of World War I; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, On May 13, 1938, Congress officially made November | ||||||
| 9 | 11 a legal holiday to be dedicated to the cause of world peace | ||||||
| 10 | and those who served in World War I; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, After World War II, and upon the urging of veteran | ||||||
| 12 | service agencies, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed | ||||||
| 13 | legislation into law that henceforth named November 11 as | ||||||
| 14 | Veterans Day, a day to celebrate all United States military | ||||||
| 15 | veterans; and
| ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, There are currently 764,203 Illinois veterans who | ||||||
| 17 | have served our State and nation; and
| ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to | ||||||
| 19 | acknowledge, support, and thank our veterans for their service; | ||||||
| 20 | and

| 1 | WHEREAS, Employers are not currently required to provide | ||||||
| 2 | time off for veterans on Veterans Day; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 3 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 4 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge employers | ||||||
| 5 | throughout the State of Illinois to recognize the importance of | ||||||
| 6 | Veterans Day and to allow our veterans the opportunity, if they | ||||||
| 7 | so choose, to participate in Veterans Day ceremonies or to take | ||||||
| 8 | time off as gratitude for their service.
