SENATE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
learn of the deaths of Paul Martin Freund and Dolores
Sokolowski-Freund of McHenry, who passed away on August 2,
2017; and
WHEREAS, Paul Freund was born in McHenry to Herbert and
Hilda Freund on October 31, 1931; he graduated from McHenry
High School, where he was a three sport athlete; he served in
the Korean War and was awarded a Bronze Star; he married Joan
M. Scholz on April 30 1955; after her passing, he married
Dolores Sokolowski on June 22, 2009; and
WHEREAS, Dolores Sokolowski-Freund was born in Marquette,
Michigan to Rita (Neault) and Thomas Mercure on February 2,
1937; she married Richard Sokolowski at St. Mary Church in
McHenry on January 31, 1959; after his passing, she married
Paul Freund on June 22, 2009; and
WHEREAS, Paul Freund was a partner with his brother,
Eugene, and his brother-in-law, Bob Freund, for the third
generation of S.H. Freund & Son general contractors until he
retired in 1990; and
WHEREAS, Paul Freund's favorite destination was his

beloved vacation home in northern Wisconsin; he loved to fish,
garden, bowl, and enjoyed helping others; his favorite sport
was baseball; he played 3rd base and pitched for the McHenry
Shamrocks and later for Old Bridge Tavern; his generosity
spilled over into more than a dozen different charities
annually; and
WHEREAS, Dolores Sokolowski-Freund was a pharmacy
technician at McHenry Drugs for more than 15 years; and
WHEREAS, Dolores Sokolowski-Freund volunteered her time at
FISH of McHenry Food Pantry, the McHenry County Farm Bureau Ag.
Expo, the Sparrow's Nest Thrift Store and Donation Center, and
the Pioneer Center for Human Services; spending time with her
brother Butchie at the Pioneer Center meant the world to her;
she was an active member and volunteer at St. Mary Catholic
Church; her hobbies included bowling, card games, fishing,
swimming, yoga, and traveling; she was very proud of her home
improvement projects and always looked forward to working on
new challenges; and
WHEREAS, Paul and Dolores Freund enjoyed traveling,
bowling, fishing, and being together; they loved their family
and treasured family gatherings; and
WHEREAS, Paul Freund was preceded in death by his first

wife, Joan; his parents; his brother, Eugene Freund; his
sister, Joan Freund; his brother-in-law, George Gilpin; and his
granddaughter, Jennifer Freund; Dolores was preceded in death
by her first husband, Richard Sokolowski; her parents; and her
siblings, Carol Ketchum, Gilbert Mercure, and Darrell Mercure;
and
WHEREAS, Paul Freund is survived by his sons, Mark Freund,
Steve (Trinette) Freund, and Chris (Nancy) Freund; his
grandchildren, Ryan (Tiffany) Freund, Kaley Freund, Erin
Freund, and Peyton Freund; his sister, Barbara Gilpin; his
sister-in-law, Frances Freund; and his brothers-in-law, Robert
Freund and Robert (Frances) Scholz; Dolores is survived by her
son, Tom (Sue) Sokolowski; her granddaughters, Amanda (John)
and Cassie; and her siblings, John (Jenna) Mercure, Rose
(Wayne) Wirfs, Richard (Marge) Mercure, Donald (Judy) Mercure,
and Butch Mercure; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
Paul Martin Freund and Dolores Sokolowski-Freund, and extend
our sincere condolences to their family, friends, and all who
knew and loved them; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
presented to the family of Paul Freund and Dolores
