SENATE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
learn of the death of Donald Cohen of Urbana, who passed away
on June 26, 2015; and
WHEREAS, David Cohen was born in Jersey City, New Jersey in
1930; he graduated from Huntington High School and attended the
State University of New York at Albany, earning his Bachelor of
Arts in Math and his Master of Arts in Physics; he served in
the United States Army and married Marilyn Joan LeFevre in
1952; and
WHEREAS, David Cohen worked as an educator and influenced
thousands of children and adults throughout his life; he began
teaching in the 50s and worked his way into teaching teachers
in the early 60s; he began his 38-year business, The Math
Program, in 1976 in Champaign/Urbana with Jerry Glenn; he was
affectionately known as "The Mathman"; and
WHEREAS, David Cohen was an award-winning watercolor
artist; he loved to read and help anyone from age 5 to infinity
learn calculus; and
WHEREAS, David Cohen was preceded in death by his brother;
his parents; and his granddaughter; and

WHEREAS, David Cohen was the devoted and loving husband of
62 years to Marilyn; the father of Brian D. Cohen (Terri), Mark
Alan (Lisa), Steven Whitney Cohen, and adopted son, Ad; the
caring grandfather of Aaron Cohen (Michelle), Carrie Ekmark
(Brian), Danny Cohen (Heather), Lian Alan, Tara Alan (Tyler),
and Tessa Cohen; and the great-grandfather of Lucas Cohen and
Charles and Kathryn Ekmark; he is also survived by a close
friend of the family, Barbara Wachs; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
Donald Cohen, and extend our sincere condolences to his family,
friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
presented to the family of David Cohen as an expression of our
deepest sympathy.
