2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Bishop Emeritus Willie F. Newbon; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Willie Newbon was born on October 23, 1936 in | ||||||
5 | Brownsville, Tennessee; his parents were Willie F. and Mattie | ||||||
6 | Jelks Newbon; he married Patsy N. Gude on March 26, 1960; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Willie Newbon believed in working and started his | ||||||
8 | first job at the Robert Halls clothing store during his high | ||||||
9 | school years; he also enjoyed sports and was an avid football | ||||||
10 | player while in high school; after graduation, he joined the | ||||||
11 | United States Army and Reserves; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Willie Newbon received Christ at the age of 12 at | ||||||
13 | the First Church of God in Christ under the leadership of | ||||||
14 | Pastor Cleveland Bell; in May of 1961, he was licensed as a | ||||||
15 | minister under the late Bishop Daniel Bostick; in May of 1967, | ||||||
16 | he was ordained as an Elder under the late Bishop L.H. Norman; | ||||||
17 | and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, In December of 1971, Willie Newbon founded | ||||||
19 | Community Temple Church of God in Christ; the doors of | ||||||
20 | Community Temple Church of God in Christ were opened on the | ||||||
21 | first Sunday in December of 1971 in a small store front; the |

1 | first service included 13 members and many children; under | ||||||
2 | Bishop Newbon's leadership, many were saved and the membership | ||||||
3 | began to grow; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, In 1984, Willie Newbon founded Liberty Temple | ||||||
5 | Church of God in Christ in Champaign, where he pastored for 2 | ||||||
6 | years; he served faithfully both as District Superintendent and | ||||||
7 | as Administrative Assistant under the late Bishop Theodore | ||||||
8 | Taylor Rose; in November of 1998, he was appointed and | ||||||
9 | installed as the Jurisdictional Prelate of Central Illinois by | ||||||
10 | the late Bishop Chandler David Owens; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Willie Newbon was preceded in death by his | ||||||
12 | parents; his grandparents; his sisters, Sarah Joyner and Ruth | ||||||
13 | Ann Turnbo; his brother, Leroy (Sonny) Newbon; and his | ||||||
14 | brother-in-law, Booker T. Joyner; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Willie Newbon is survived by his loving wife of 53 | ||||||
16 | years, Senior First Lady Pat N. Newbon; his children, Pastor | ||||||
17 | Andrei (Marcia) Newbon, Leslie Newbon, Eric (Holly) Newbon, and | ||||||
18 | Sacorea Newbon; his grandchildren, Andrenique Newbon, | ||||||
19 | Alexander Newbon, Alexis Newbon, Ashlyn Newbon, and Addison | ||||||
20 | Newbon; his sisters, Louise (Howard) Roberson, Gladys (Mac) | ||||||
21 | Shields, Joan Lee, Dorothy (Charles) Helm, Linda Lee, Bernadine | ||||||
22 | Lee, and Joyce Lee; his brothers, Joel (Ida Ruth) Rivers and UL | ||||||
23 | (Billie) Newbon; his sisters-in-law, Mary (Donald) Williamson, |

1 | Frances Hill, Ina Sanders, and Willie Mae Newbon; his | ||||||

4 | nieces, nephews, and cousins; therefore, be it

5 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | ||||||
6 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his | ||||||
7 | family and friends, mourn the passing of Bishop Emeritus Willie | ||||||
8 | F. Newbon; and be it further

9 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
10 | presented to the family of Willie Newbon as an expression of | ||||||
11 | our sympathy.
