SENATE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
learn of the death of Dennis Keith Matthews of Nokomis, who
passed away on October 17, 2019; and
WHEREAS, Dennis Matthews was born during the Great
Depression on January 13, 1935 in rural Fillmore to Lonnie I.
and Opal R. (Funderburk) Matthews; and
WHEREAS, During the 1950s, Dennis Matthews worked for a
variety of neighboring farmers and with his dad on the family
farm; he took a job at Allis Chalmers in Springfield and
married Joyce A. Volk on December 1, 1957; they made rural
Nokomis their home for 61 years; and
WHEREAS, During the 1960s, Dennis Matthews continued
working at Allis Chalmers and farming; farming became full time
for him in the early 1970s with the addition of a swine
operation; his son Daniel began farming alongside him in the
1980s; and
WHEREAS, Dennis Matthews was active in the community with
4-H, the Nokomis School Board, the Nokomis School Booster Club,
the local grain elevator board, the Nokomis Lions Club, the
Masons, the Shriners, the MJM Rural Electric board, and Meals

on Wheels; he was elected Nokomis Township Supervisor; and
WHEREAS, Dennis Matthews was a strong person and a giving
human being; he was funny, mischievous, and hardworking and
expected everyone who worked with him to have a dedicated work
ethic; most of all, he loved his family and friends; and
WHEREAS, Dennis Matthews was preceded in death by his
parents; and
WHEREAS, Dennis Matthews is survived by his wife, Joyce;
his brother, Darwin D. (Brenda J.) Matthews; his children,
Daniel Keith (Sydney Risser) Matthews and Dorothy Kay (John)
Padgett; his grandchildren, Jessica (Adam) Avera, Wesley
(Jenna) Matthews, Donald Padgett, and Keith Padgett; his
great-grandchildren, Sophie Stombaugh, Karter Kirkendoll, and
Maddox Matthews; numerous nieces and nephews; and many special
friends who are like family; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
Dennis Keith Matthews and extend our sincere condolences to his
family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
