| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of Dr. Arthur J. "Art" Siedler of Champaign, | ||||||
| 4 | who passed away on June 12, 2015; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Dr. Siedler was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on | ||||||
| 6 | March 17, 1927 to Arthur William and Margaret (nee Stadler) | ||||||
| 7 | Siedler; he served with the United States Coast Guard from 1945 | ||||||
| 8 | to 1946 on the USS General W.H. Gordon (AP-117); he was awarded | ||||||
| 9 | American and Asiatic Theater ribbons; he received a Bachelor of | ||||||
| 10 | Science from the University of Wisconsin in 1951, a Master of | ||||||
| 11 | Science from the University of Chicago in 1956, and a Doctor of | ||||||
| 12 | Philosophy from the University of Chicago in 1959; he married | ||||||
| 13 | Doris Jean Rose in St. Petersburg, Florida on February 23, | ||||||
| 14 | 1976; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Dr. Siedler was chief of the Division of | ||||||
| 16 | Biochemistry and Nutrition at the American Meat Institute | ||||||
| 17 | Foundation in Chicago from 1959 to 1964; a group leader at the | ||||||
| 18 | Norwich (New York) Pharmaceutical Company from 1964 to 1965; | ||||||
| 19 | chief of the Physiology Section from 1965 to 1969; and chief of | ||||||
| 20 | the Biochemistry Section from 1969 to 1972; he then moved on to | ||||||
| 21 | the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he became | ||||||
| 22 | acting director of the Division of Nutritional Science from | ||||||
| 23 | 1978 to 1981; head of the Department of Food Science from 1972 | ||||||

| 1 | to 1989; professor of Food Science, Internal Medicine and | ||||||
| 2 | Nutritional Science from 1972 to 1994; and professor emeritus | ||||||
| 3 | since 1994; and
| ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, Dr. Siedler was elected as Fellow of IFT | ||||||
| 5 | (Institute of Food Technologists) and was awarded the | ||||||
| 6 | Chairman's Service Award from the Chicago Section of IFT; he | ||||||
| 7 | also was Chair of the Committee on Food Stability for the | ||||||
| 8 | Natick Labs for the Department of Defense; he was the 1959 | ||||||
| 9 | National Livestock and Meat Board Grantee and the 1960 National | ||||||
| 10 | Institute of Health Research Grantee; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Dr. Siedler enjoyed a good party, bloodies and | ||||||
| 12 | Manhattans, and beer; he loved the Fighting Illini and enjoyed | ||||||
| 13 | gardening and making homemade salsa; he loved good eats, | ||||||
| 14 | fishing, and a good cigar; he made frequent trips to Alaska to | ||||||
| 15 | fish for salmon with his son, Bill; and
| ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, Dr. Siedler was preceded in death by his sister, | ||||||
| 17 | Doris Weinauer, and his step-son, Rick Rose; and
| ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, Dr. Siedler is survived by his wife, Doris; his | ||||||
| 19 | son, Bill Siedler (Genie); his daughter, Nancy Wilhite; his | ||||||
| 20 | daughter, Sandy Goodner (Joe); his step-daughter, Roxanne | ||||||
| 21 | (Craig) Butler; his step-son, Randy Rose; his 12 grandchildren; | ||||||
| 22 | his 11 great-grandchildren; his nephews and nieces; and | ||||||

| 1 | countless friends and former colleagues; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 2 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 3 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 4 | Dr. Arthur J. "Art" Siedler, and extend our sincere condolences | ||||||
| 5 | to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be | ||||||
| 6 | it further
| ||||||
| 7 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 8 | presented to the family of Dr. Siedler as an expression of our | ||||||
| 9 | deepest sympathy.
