SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Bernard H. Schmidt, who passed away on
4June 23, 2017; and
5 WHEREAS, Bernard Schmidt was born in Milan to Louis and
6Maude Sackville Schmidt on April 1, 1930; he graduated with a
7bachelor's degree in geology from Augustana College in Rock
8Island; he joined the United States Army and served with the
9Eighth Army Intelligence during the Korean War; his company was
10awarded a unit letter of recognition from the South Korean
11government for their work during the war; he married Mardelle
12Wulf in Iowa City, Iowa on January 12, 1954; and
13 WHEREAS, Bernard Schmidt returned home after the war and
14worked on the family farm and his brother Larry's farm until
15retiring at the age of 73; he loved spending his days on the
16farm and rebuilding windmills; he also worked for the Olive
17Iron Mining Company in Michigan; and
18 WHEREAS, Bernard Schmidt was preceded in death by his wife,
19Mardelle, and his siblings, Gloryl, Marlin (Jake), Virgil
20(Stub), Elizabeth (Betty), Duane (Hein), and Stanley; and
21 WHEREAS, Bernard Schmidt is survived by his children, Grant

1(Debbie) Schmidt, Bradley (Lisa) Schmidt, Lee Schmidt, and
2Kathy (Kevin) Dean; his grandchildren, Jennifer, Heather,
3Markie, Matthew, Sarah, Kristin, Chad, and Austin; and his
4siblings, Desyl, Ramona, Karen, and Larry; therefore, be it
5 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
6ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
7Bernard H. Schmidt, and extend our sincere condolences to his
8family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
9further
10 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11presented to the family of Bernard Schmidt as an expression of
12our deepest sympathy.
