| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of Penny Miller of Sarasota, Florida, | ||||||
| 4 | formerly of Evanston, who passed away on July 13, 2019; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Penny Miller was born in Millerville, Minnesota to | ||||||
| 6 | Roman and Crescentia (Wilken) Miller in 1943; she graduated | ||||||
| 7 | from Waukegan Township High School; she attended Loyola | ||||||
| 8 | University in Rome, Italy and graduated from Marquette | ||||||
| 9 | University; she received her master's degree from Northern | ||||||
| 10 | Illinois University; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Penny Miller was a dedicated teacher and mentor | ||||||
| 12 | during her 36-year teaching career at West Elementary and | ||||||
| 13 | Washington Elementary Schools in Waukegan; she served as a | ||||||
| 14 | Union Representative and earned a Teacher of the Year Award; | ||||||
| 15 | she was a member of the Lake County Retired Teachers | ||||||
| 16 | Association and the Illinois Retired Teachers Association; and
| ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, Penny Miller was active in several organizations, | ||||||
| 18 | including the Evanston Housing Commission, the Southeast | ||||||
| 19 | Evanston Association, and the Evanston Property Owners | ||||||
| 20 | Association; in the early 1980s, she and Ashraf received an | ||||||
| 21 | Evanston Preservation Award for the rehabilitation of a | ||||||
| 22 | condemned house; a proud feminist, she was a founding member of | ||||||

| 1 | the Waukegan Chapter of the National Organization for Women; | ||||||
| 2 | she was also a member of the Jane Collective in the early | ||||||
| 3 | 1970s; she enjoyed traveling, learning, reading, trying to | ||||||
| 4 | golf, retirement, her family, and her friends, especially the | ||||||
| 5 | Grapes; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Penny Miller was preceded in death by her parents; | ||||||
| 7 | and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Penny Miller is survived by her partner, Richard | ||||||
| 9 | Hershman; her brothers, Michael (Patricia Berry) Miller and | ||||||
| 10 | Jonathan Miller; her nieces and nephews, Stacy Mahoney, Nicole | ||||||
| 11 | Miller, and Ed Stevenson; her great-nieces and great-nephews, | ||||||
| 12 | Lily, Susie, and Margee Mahoney and Brendon, Alex, Nate, and | ||||||
| 13 | Carly Crescentia Stevenson; her former husband, Ashraf Manji; | ||||||
| 14 | and many friends and relatives; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 15 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
| 16 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 17 | Penny Miller and extend our sincere condolences to her family, | ||||||
| 18 | friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further
| ||||||
| 19 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 20 | presented to the family of Penny Miller as an expression of our | ||||||
| 21 | deepest sympathy.
