| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of Sally Page of Peoria, who passed away on | ||||||
| 4 | October 15, 2011; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, She had founding roles at Lakeview Museum, Planned | ||||||
| 6 | Parenthood, the Arts and Sciences Council, the Human Service | ||||||
| 7 | Center, and other central Illinois agencies and institutions; | ||||||
| 8 | her community leadership spanned 7 decades, from her work | ||||||
| 9 | during World War II to establish the Central Volunteer Bureau | ||||||
| 10 | to her passionate support for the Riverfront Museum; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, She chaired the Lakeview Museum council's museum | ||||||
| 12 | committee, led the fund drive, was president when Lakeview | ||||||
| 13 | opened in 1965 and 13 years later led the fund drive to expand | ||||||
| 14 | the museum; 4 decades after groundbreaking for the museum, she | ||||||
| 15 | was happy to be present when the development agreement for the | ||||||
| 16 | new Riverfront Museum was signed; and
| ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, She also treasured the collaboration that merged 4 | ||||||
| 18 | mental health and addiction-related organizations into the | ||||||
| 19 | Human Service Center in 1976; as president of the Comprehensive | ||||||
| 20 | Mental Health Board in the early 1970s, she understood that | ||||||
| 21 | many needing mental health treatment suffered related | ||||||
| 22 | problems, such as addiction, and would fare better if cared for | ||||||

| 1 | under one roof; in 1986, the Human Service Center named its | ||||||
| 2 | counseling family home after her; and
| ||||||
| 3 | WHEREAS, She was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 29, | ||||||
| 4 | 1917, to Justus and Hildegard Kirby and grew up in Los Angeles; | ||||||
| 5 | she graduated from Smith College and married Ted Page in 1939; | ||||||
| 6 | and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, While her husband served in World War II, she | ||||||
| 8 | helped fill in the gaps on the home front by organizing and | ||||||
| 9 | presiding over the Central Volunteer Bureau, the first of its | ||||||
| 10 | kind in Peoria; she championed the establishment of a Planned | ||||||
| 11 | Parenthood chapter in Peoria in the 1950s; in 1968, when a | ||||||
| 12 | busing program was put in place to desegregate District 150 | ||||||
| 13 | schools, she led an effort to enlist volunteer tutors to help | ||||||
| 14 | struggling students in their new schools; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, She was also involved in the South Side Mission, | ||||||
| 16 | Common Place, the United Way, the Junior League of Peoria, the | ||||||
| 17 | Girl Scouts, Illinois Advocates of the Arts, the Lay Ministries | ||||||
| 18 | Committee of the Peoria Area Council of Churches, and the First | ||||||
| 19 | Baptist Church of Peoria, where she was a 72-year member; and
| ||||||
| 20 | WHEREAS, In 1978, she was among 11 recipients statewide of | ||||||
| 21 | the inaugural Governors Award for the Arts; among her other | ||||||
| 22 | awards was the YWCA Legend Award; she and her husband were the | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | first husband and wife team to be named Citizen of the Year by | ||||||
| 2 | B'nai B'rith in 1979; and
| ||||||
| 3 | WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted; and
| ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, Sally Page is survived by her children, Sally | ||||||
| 5 | Snyder, Ted (Sally) Barrett-Page, and Susan (John) Miller; her | ||||||
| 6 | 10 grandchildren; and her 11 great-grandchildren; therefore, | ||||||
| 7 | be it

| 8 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 9 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
| 10 | her family and friends, the passing of Sally Page; and be it | ||||||
| 11 | further
| ||||||
| 12 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 13 | presented to the family of Sally Page as a symbol of our | ||||||
| 14 | sincere sympathy.
