| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of Betsy G. Berry of Michigan City, Indiana, | ||||||
| 4 | who passed away on April 26, 2019; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Betsy Berry was born in Chicago; she served in the | ||||||
| 6 | U.S. Navy in the 1940s and graduated from Roosevelt University; | ||||||
| 7 | she married Edwin C. "Bill" Berry in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in | ||||||
| 8 | September 1956; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, Betsy Berry had a successful career as a real | ||||||
| 10 | estate agent in the Hyde Park area; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Betsy Berry moved to Michigan City, Indiana in the | ||||||
| 12 | late 1980s; she worked with the Three Oaks Food Pantry and | ||||||
| 13 | volunteered at the homeless shelter; she was on the Literacy | ||||||
| 14 | Advisory Board of the Michigan City Public Library, where she | ||||||
| 15 | tutored English as a second language; she was a mentor at the | ||||||
| 16 | Hours For Ours program at Michigan City schools and served as a | ||||||
| 17 | board member of the North Central Community Action Agency; she | ||||||
| 18 | was dedicated to promoting civil rights throughout her | ||||||
| 19 | lifetime; and
| ||||||
| 20 | WHEREAS, Betsy Berry was preceded in death by her husband, | ||||||
| 21 | Bill; her adopted son, Myron H. Wahls; and her brother, Robert | ||||||

| 1 | M. Bell; and
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Betsy Berry is survived by her adopted children, | ||||||
| 3 | Joseph M. Berry, Charles Carter, Westina Matthews Shatteen, and | ||||||
| 4 | Melanie Berry; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; many | ||||||
| 5 | nieces and nephews; and numerous friends in the Michigan City | ||||||
| 6 | and Chicago area; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 7 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
| 8 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 9 | Betsy G. Berry and extend our sincere condolences to her | ||||||
| 10 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | ||||||
| 11 | further
| ||||||
| 12 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 13 | presented to the family of Betsy Berry as an expression of our | ||||||
| 14 | deepest sympathy.
