SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Sergeant Gerrick D. Smith of Sullivan,
4 who was killed in the line of duty in Herat, Afghanistan on
5 July 28, 2009; and
6 WHEREAS, Gerrick Smith was born February 14, 1990 in
7 Decatur, the son of Marilyn Smith and David Jones; and
8 WHEREAS, Gerrick attended the Church of Christ; he was a
9 member of Sullivan Boy Scout Troop #39; and he was a 2008
10 graduate of Sullivan High School, where he participated in
11 football, soccer, track, and the Sullivan Singers; and
12 WHEREAS, He joined the Illinois Army National Guard in his
13 junior year of high school and was mobilized for active duty in
14 October of 2008; and
15 WHEREAS, He was a member of the 130th Infantry based in
16 Marion; he was posthumously promoted to Sergeant; and
17 WHEREAS, Sergeant Gerrick Smith is survived by his mother,
18 Marilyn Smith; his sister, Seeley Smith; his maternal
19 grandparents, Tom and Mary Smith; his father, David Jones; his
20 paternal grandparents, Dale and Sharon Jones; his

1 half-brother, Eric Jones; his nephew, several aunts and uncles,
2 and many friends; therefore, be it
3 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
4 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
5 his family and friends and a grateful nation, the passing of
6 Sergeant Gerrick D. Smith; and be it further
7 RESOLVED, That we honor the memory of Sergeant Gerrick
8 Smith and his willingness to serve his country, which led to
9 him making the ultimate sacrifice; and be it further
10 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11 presented to the family of Sergeant Gerrick Smith as a symbol
12 of our sincere sympathy.
