2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Frank Gallo of Urbana, who passed away on | ||||||
4 | March 22, 2019; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Frank Gallo was born in Toledo, Ohio to Joseph and | ||||||
6 | Pauline on January 13, 1933; he graduated from the University | ||||||
7 | of Toledo and received his Master of Fine Arts from the | ||||||
8 | University of Iowa, where he worked with renowned printmaker | ||||||
9 | Mauricio Lasansky; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Frank Gallo was a sculptor and the Head of | ||||||
11 | Graduate Sculpture at the University of Illinois; throughout | ||||||
12 | his years as a teacher, he continued to create his own unique | ||||||
13 | sculptures; for a number of years, he exhibited large epoxy | ||||||
14 | figures before going to France to study glass at Daum | ||||||
15 | Cristallerie in 1972; he was a pioneer in cast paper, a | ||||||
16 | technique he taught in the handmade paper and paper casting | ||||||
17 | program he helped initiate at the University of Illinois; in | ||||||
18 | 1969, he was commissioned by Time magazine to produce the | ||||||
19 | magazine's cover art, featuring a sculpture of Raquel Welch, | ||||||
20 | which is in the collection of the National Sculpture Museum; it | ||||||
21 | was recognized as Cover of the Year by the American Institute | ||||||
22 | of Graphic Arts; and

1 | WHEREAS, Frank Gallo received numerous awards during his | ||||||
2 | career, including a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 1966 | ||||||
3 | and a National Academy of Arts and Letters Award for Excellence | ||||||
4 | in 1969; he was named Best Illustrator of the Year by the | ||||||
5 | Society of Published Designers in 1979; he won the Best of | ||||||
6 | Category Award, Chicago '79 Annual and the National Sculpture | ||||||
7 | Society Annual Sculpture Prize in 1992; he was awarded the | ||||||
8 | Senior Scholar Award from the University of Illinois in 1985; | ||||||
9 | and

10 | WHEREAS, Museum exhibitions holding Frank Gallo's work | ||||||
11 | include the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Museum of Arts | ||||||
12 | and Contemporary Crafts, New York, "People Figures," 1966; the | ||||||
13 | Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto International Sculpture | ||||||
14 | Symposium 1967; Alliance on Art, the Smithsonian Institute, | ||||||
15 | Washington, D.C., 1968; the Museo de Arte Moderna, Rio de | ||||||
16 | Janeiro; Works on Paper, Art Institute of Chicago, 1978; the | ||||||
17 | Royal College of Art in London group exhibition in 1978; the | ||||||
18 | Frank Gallo Retrospective, Paine Art Center, Oshkosh, | ||||||
19 | Wisconsin, 1983; the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art; the Los | ||||||
20 | Angeles County Museum; and the Baltimore Museum of Art; in | ||||||
21 | 1968, he represented the United States in the prestigious | ||||||
22 | Venice Biennale; and

23 | WHEREAS, Frank Gallo will be remembered for his generosity, | ||||||
24 | unique sense of humor, and brazen personality; and

1 | WHEREAS, Frank Gallo was preceded in death by his parents; | ||||||
2 | his brothers, Sam and Bill; and his sister, Betty; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Frank Gallo is survived by his children, Joseph | ||||||
4 | (Stephanie) Gallo and Polly Gallo; his grandchildren, Dillon, | ||||||
5 | Ian, Mason, and Mia Gallo; his first wife, Mary Gallo; and his | ||||||
6 | dear friends, Barbara and Anne Wolfe; therefore, be it
| ||||||
7 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
8 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
9 | Frank Gallo and extend our sincere condolences to his family, | ||||||
10 | friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
| ||||||
11 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
12 | presented to the family of Frank Gallo as an expression of our | ||||||
13 | deepest sympathy.
