2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Joe V. Michael of Aurora, who passed away | ||||||
4 | on March 17, 2019; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Joe Michael was born in
South Whitley, Indiana on | ||||||
6 | October 2, 1935; he was raised in South Whitley and attended | ||||||
7 | Larwell High School; he received a Bachelor of Arts in
| ||||||
8 | Chemistry from Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana and a | ||||||
9 | Doctor of Philosophy from the
University of Rochester in New | ||||||
10 | York; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Joe Michael began his career teaching classes as a | ||||||
12 | postdoctoral associate at Harvard University; he
worked as a | ||||||
13 | postdoctoral associate and chemist for the Brookhaven National | ||||||
14 | Laboratory and for
Carnegie Mellon University as an associate | ||||||
15 | professor; from 1975 to 1977, he was a
research associate for | ||||||
16 | NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and retired as
a senior | ||||||
17 | chemist at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont in December | ||||||
18 | 2015; and

19 | WHEREAS, Joe Michael had over 200 publications in science | ||||||
20 | magazines and was a
Fellow of The Combustion Institute; he was | ||||||
21 | a
member of the American Association for the Advancement of | ||||||
22 | Science, the American Chemical
Society, the American |

1 | Geophysical Union, and the scientific research honor society | ||||||
2 | Sigma Xi; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Joe Michael was a member of Grace United Methodist | ||||||
4 | Church in Naperville and sang tenor with the
Naperville Men's | ||||||
5 | Glee Club; he enjoyed traveling with his wife, Valerie, and | ||||||
6 | spoke at
many chemistry symposiums and meetings in the U.S. and | ||||||
7 | around the world; he also enjoyed fishing, singing, coaching | ||||||
8 | basketball, Boy Scouts, Indian guides, attending concerts, and | ||||||
9 | supporting his family; and

10 | WHEREAS, Joe Michael was the beloved husband of over 32 | ||||||
11 | years of Valerie Michael (Jeter); the loving
father of Susan | ||||||
12 | (Tim) Maloney, Jane (Gary) Portman, Jonathan (Rochelle) | ||||||
13 | Michael, Derek
Efimetz, and Eugene Michael; the grandfather of | ||||||
14 | Amanda, Jenna, and Olivia Maloney,
Michael, Rachel, Nicole, and | ||||||
15 | Stephen Portman, and David, Justin, and Michael Grogan; the son | ||||||
16 | of the late
Samuel Elden "Punch" Michael and Edna Emily | ||||||
17 | Michael; the brother of Tom (Bonnie) Michael, the
late Steve | ||||||
18 | (Lois) Michael, the late Richard "Dick" (Sarah) Michael, and | ||||||
19 | the late Mollie (the late
Jim) Payne; the brother-in-law of | ||||||
