| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of
Alton L. Gill, Sr. who passed away on | ||||||
| 4 | April 17, 2009; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Alton L. Gill, Sr. was born on December 20, 1914 | ||||||
| 6 | in Brookhaven, Mississippi; he was born to the union of John | ||||||
| 7 | Gill and Ruth Carter; he married Celestine Bunch on November | ||||||
| 8 | 20, 1936; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, After relocating to Chicago from Mississippi as a | ||||||
| 10 | child, Alton L. Gill, Sr. began his education at Doolittle | ||||||
| 11 | Grammar School and Oakland Grammar School, before moving on to | ||||||
| 12 | St. Elizabeth High School and graduating at Wendell Philip High | ||||||
| 13 | School; and
| ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, Alton L. Gill, Sr. was employed at Northwestern | ||||||
| 15 | Railroad as a Pullman porter in the dining room car for over 20 | ||||||
| 16 | years; as a child, he served as an apprentice at Joe Horowitz | ||||||
| 17 | Meat Market in the Bronzeville neighborhood; his | ||||||
| 18 | apprenticeship enabled him to pursue his dream of establishing | ||||||
| 19 | his own business, a supermarket in Griffith, Indiana; he also | ||||||
| 20 | pursued farming in Michigan and became an agricultural | ||||||
| 21 | entrepreneur, raising farm animals and crops which he later | ||||||
| 22 | sold in Chicago; and
| ||||||

| 1 | WHEREAS, Alton L. Gill, Sr. served his country with pride | ||||||
| 2 | and distinction as a member of the Illinois National Guard for | ||||||
| 3 | nine years; and
| ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, Alton L. Gill, Sr. enjoyed ballroom dancing, | ||||||
| 5 | fishing, and collecting coins; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Alton L. Gill, Sr. accepted Christ at an early | ||||||
| 7 | age; he would later join the Catholic Church through the St. | ||||||
| 8 | Columbanus Parish and serve as a long-time member of St. | ||||||
| 9 | Dorothy Catholic Church and St. Dorothy's Holy Name Society; in | ||||||
| 10 | his later years, he attended St. Sabina while living as a | ||||||
| 11 | resident of the St. Sabina Elders Village; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Alton L. Gill, Sr. is survived by his children, | ||||||
| 13 | Alton Jr. (Madeline) and LaVergne (Bob); his grandchildren, | ||||||
| 14 | Lynette (Bruce), Adam, Aaron (Malikah), and Robert; his | ||||||
| 15 | great-grandchildren, Bruce, Jr., Naimah, Noah, and Dakari; his | ||||||
| 16 | stepsons, Bill (Shirley) and John; and his many loving cousins | ||||||
| 17 | and friends; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 18 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 19 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
| 20 | his family and friends, the passing of Alton L. Gill, Sr.; and | ||||||
| 21 | be it further
| ||||||

| 1 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 2 | presented to the family of Alton L. Gill, Sr. as an expression | ||||||
| 3 | of our sympathy.
