1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death | ||||||
3 | for both men and women, and within every ethnic population, in | ||||||
4 | Illinois, the United States, and the world; this year, lung | ||||||
5 | cancer killed more Americans than breast, prostate, and colon | ||||||
6 | cancer combined; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, In 2012, an estimated 226,160 new cases of lung | ||||||
8 | cancer were diagnosed in the United States (116,470 among men | ||||||
9 | and 109,640 among women); and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, In 2012, there were an estimated 160,340 deaths | ||||||
11 | from lung cancer in the United States (87,750 among men and | ||||||
12 | 72,590 among women), accounting for about 27% of all cancer | ||||||
13 | deaths; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, In 2012, there were an estimated 9,190 people | ||||||
15 | diagnosed with lung cancer in the State of Illinois; it is | ||||||
16 | estimated that more than 6,590 residents succumbed to the | ||||||
17 | disease; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Causes of lung cancer include smoking, secondhand | ||||||
19 | smoke, exposure to toxins and known carcinogens, and genetic | ||||||
20 | abnormalities; and

1 | WHEREAS, 80% of lung cancer cases are diagnosed in people | ||||||
2 | who have never smoked or who have quit smoking; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, An estimated 90% of lung cancer deaths among men | ||||||
4 | and nearly 80% of lung cancer deaths among women are attributed | ||||||
5 | to smoking; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Lung cancer has a poor prognosis; even with | ||||||
7 | treatment, people with advanced non-small cell lung cancer have | ||||||
8 | a 5-year survival rate of less than 5%; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Increased awareness and coordination among all | ||||||
10 | stakeholders, including federal and state governments, | ||||||
11 | providers, patient groups, community leaders and | ||||||
12 | organizations, the public, businesses, and researchers, is | ||||||
13 | critical to promote the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of | ||||||
14 | lung cancer; therefore, be it

15 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | ||||||
16 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we designate the month | ||||||
17 | of November of 2013 as Lung Cancer Awareness Month in the State | ||||||
18 | of Illinois.
