| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Tommy "Tom" Thompson of Springfield, | ||||||
4 | who passed away on April 19, 2023; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Tom Thompson was born in Lincoln on August 24, | ||||||
6 | 1930, the son of Martin and Ida (Stover) Thompson; he | ||||||
7 | graduated from Lincoln Community High School in 1948, where he | ||||||
8 | played football, basketball, and track, and Lincoln College, | ||||||
9 | where he played basketball; he also attended Illinois State | ||||||
10 | University and the University of Illinois; he served in the | ||||||
11 | U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was stationed in New | ||||||
12 | Jersey; he married Elva "Elvie" Fuchs on April 28, 1956, and | ||||||
13 | she preceded him in death on January 3, 2019; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Tom Thompson worked as a loan officer with CIT, | ||||||
15 | Capital Chrysler Plymouth, and the original Marine Bank for | ||||||
16 | many years; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Tom Thompson was proud of his hometown and | ||||||
18 | enjoyed taking his friends and family on tours of it; he | ||||||
19 | received the key to the City of Lincoln for his 75th birthday; | ||||||
20 | and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Tom Thompson was a member of Our Savior's |

1 | Lutheran Church, where he served as an usher for many years; | ||||||
2 | and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Tom Thompson loved sports and was a lifelong fan | ||||||
4 | of Lincoln High School sports, particularly basketball, and | ||||||
5 | the Chicago Cubs, the Chicago Bears, and the Fighting Illini; | ||||||
6 | as an adult, he was an avid fast pitch softball player and | ||||||
7 | played for the Pluth Tinners; later in life, he played slow | ||||||
8 | pitch softball, which he continued well into his 60s; he also | ||||||
9 | enjoyed watching and coaching his children's sporting events | ||||||
10 | and attending nearly all of his grandsons' games; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Tom Thompson loved traveling with his wife, Elva, | ||||||
12 | which including taking many overseas trips, and he visited | ||||||
13 | five continents in his lifetime; he also loved music, | ||||||
14 | particularly big band, show tunes, military songs, and | ||||||
15 | Mariachi music, and telling stories from his past; above all, | ||||||
16 | he loved his family dearly; and

17 | WHEREAS, Tom Thompson was preceded in death by his wife; | ||||||
18 | his son, Gary Thompson; and his brother, Richard Thompson; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Tom Thompson is survived by his daughter, Gayle | ||||||
20 | (Dirk) Eilers; his son, Stu (Patti) Thompson; his grandsons, | ||||||
21 | Zane Thompson, Chase Thompson, and Colton (fiancé, Meagan | ||||||
22 | Gonyon) Eilers; and his many nieces and nephews; therefore, be |

2 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
3 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
4 | Tommy "Tom" Thompson and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
5 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
6 | further

7 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
8 | presented to the family of Tom Thompson as an expression of our | ||||||
9 | deepest sympathy.
