2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of
Reverend George Orval Dougherty, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on February 22, 2011; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, George Dougherty was born on June 27, 1927, in | ||||||
6 | Harrisburg; his parents were Orval and Hallie (Malone) | ||||||
7 | Dougherty; he married Rosella Nell Ledbetter on December 26, | ||||||
8 | 1944; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, George Dougherty attended high school in | ||||||
10 | Harrisburg, where he became a state champion runner in track; | ||||||
11 | he loved running and continued to run throughout his life, even | ||||||
12 | into his 70s, and won numerous local and state awards; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, George Dougherty served in the United States Army | ||||||
14 | during World War II until he was honorably discharged; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, In his early 20s, George Dougherty answered the | ||||||
16 | call of God on his life to be a minister of the Word and began | ||||||
17 | pastoring in General Baptist churches in Raleigh and Stonefort; | ||||||
18 | in 1960, he was called to pastor the First General Baptist | ||||||
19 | Church in East Alton, where he served for seven years; in 1967, | ||||||
20 | he and his family moved to Kingston, Jamaica, to serve as | ||||||
21 | missionaries for seven years; upon returning to the United |

1 | States, he founded the Alpha Chapel, which he pastored for 25 | ||||||
2 | years until his retirement in 1997; during that time, he | ||||||
3 | established the Alpha Christian Academy, which offers | ||||||
4 | kindergarten through grade 12 schooling to the children of the | ||||||
5 | church; and

6 | WHEREAS, George Dougherty was a member of the Bethalto | ||||||
7 | Church of God; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, George Dougherty was preceded in death by his | ||||||
9 | parents and his sister, Evelyn Dallas; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, George Dougherty is survived by his sisters, Jean | ||||||
11 | Richard and Barbara Dougherty; his wife, Rosella; his daughters | ||||||
12 | and their spouses, Lee Ann and Gary Tedrick, Patty and Dennis | ||||||
13 | Adams, and Nancy and Mark Leady; his grandchildren, Jennifer | ||||||
14 | Tedrick Schulz, Mindy Adams Schuette, Amber Adams Greenwell, | ||||||
15 | Christal Adams Allemand, Kendra Adams Warren, Eric Fairfax, | ||||||
16 | Jami Fairfax Anderson, and Mark Leady Jr.; his | ||||||
17 | great-grandchildren, Truman and Ellie Schulz, Isabella and Eli | ||||||
18 | Schuette, Emma, Grace, and Mia Greenwell, Noelle and Jada | ||||||
19 | Allemand, Carson Warren, Zarion Felder, Baya Fairfax, Landon | ||||||

2 | his family and friends, the passing of Reverend George Orval | ||||||
3 | Dougherty; and be it further

5 | presented to the family of George Dougherty as an expression of | ||||||
