SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Reverend George Orval Dougherty, who
4passed away on February 22, 2011; and
5 WHEREAS, George Dougherty was born on June 27, 1927, in
6Harrisburg; his parents were Orval and Hallie (Malone)
7Dougherty; he married Rosella Nell Ledbetter on December 26,
81944; and
9 WHEREAS, George Dougherty attended high school in
10Harrisburg, where he became a state champion runner in track;
11he loved running and continued to run throughout his life, even
12into his 70s, and won numerous local and state awards; and
13 WHEREAS, George Dougherty served in the United States Army
14during World War II until he was honorably discharged; and
15 WHEREAS, In his early 20s, George Dougherty answered the
16call of God on his life to be a minister of the Word and began
17pastoring in General Baptist churches in Raleigh and Stonefort;
18in 1960, he was called to pastor the First General Baptist
19Church in East Alton, where he served for seven years; in 1967,
20he and his family moved to Kingston, Jamaica, to serve as
21missionaries for seven years; upon returning to the United

1States, he founded the Alpha Chapel, which he pastored for 25
2years until his retirement in 1997; during that time, he
3established the Alpha Christian Academy, which offers
4kindergarten through grade 12 schooling to the children of the
5church; and
6 WHEREAS, George Dougherty was a member of the Bethalto
7Church of God; and
8 WHEREAS, George Dougherty was preceded in death by his
9parents and his sister, Evelyn Dallas; and
10 WHEREAS, George Dougherty is survived by his sisters, Jean
11Richard and Barbara Dougherty; his wife, Rosella; his daughters
12and their spouses, Lee Ann and Gary Tedrick, Patty and Dennis
13Adams, and Nancy and Mark Leady; his grandchildren, Jennifer
14Tedrick Schulz, Mindy Adams Schuette, Amber Adams Greenwell,
15Christal Adams Allemand, Kendra Adams Warren, Eric Fairfax,
16Jami Fairfax Anderson, and Mark Leady Jr.; his
17great-grandchildren, Truman and Ellie Schulz, Isabella and Eli
18Schuette, Emma, Grace, and Mia Greenwell, Noelle and Jada
19Allemand, Carson Warren, Zarion Felder, Baya Fairfax, Landon
20and Dylan Bollinger, Tobin and Aidyn Faulkner, and Palin Leady;
21therefore, be it
22 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL

2his family and friends, the passing of Reverend George Orval
