SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of
3cancer-related deaths in the U.S. and is projected to be the
4second leading cause of cancer-related deaths by 2030; and
5 WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers
6and has the lowest five-year survival rate at just 10%; and
7 WHEREAS, In 2023, an estimated 60,430 U.S. residents will
8be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and more than 48,220 will
9die from the disease; and
10 WHEREAS, Due to increased awareness, pancreatic cancer
11survival rates have been improving; however, the disease is
12still considered largely incurable; with all stages of
13pancreatic cancer combined, the one-year relative survival
14rate is 20% and the five-year rate is 9%; and
15 WHEREAS, The problem is that high-risk people are not
16being screened in the early and potentially curable stages of
17pancreatic cancer; and
18 WHEREAS, Risk factors can include chronic or hereditary
19pancreatitis, obesity, regular consumption of high dietary
20fats, alcohol abuse, smoking, family history, age, and

1long-standing diabetes; and
2 WHEREAS, Symptoms can include abdominal pain, mid-to-upper
3back pain, weight loss, jaundice that is yellowing of the skin
4and eyes, nausea, loss of appetite, changes in stool, and
5new-onset diabetes; and
6 WHEREAS, Early screening will save lives; therefore, be it
7 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare the month of
9November 2023 as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month in the
10State of Illinois; and be it further
11 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
12presented to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN),
13the American Cancer Society, and Dr. Paul Grippo of the
14University of Illinois at Chicago with our sincere
15appreciation for their efforts to address pancreatic cancer.
