Bill Title: Amends the Prenatal Syphilis Act. In provisions concerning blood testing of pregnant women, provides that the period for the taking of a second sample of blood during the third trimester of pregnancy is between 27 and 32 weeks, and provides that the purpose of the taking of a second sample of blood during the third trimester of pregnancy is to ensure treatment begins 30 days before delivery.

1 AN ACT concerning health.
2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
4 Section 5. The Prenatal Syphilis Act is amended by
5changing Section 1 as follows:
6 (410 ILCS 320/1) (from Ch. 111 1/2, par. 4801)
7 Sec. 1. Every physician, or other person, attending in a
8professional capacity a pregnant woman in Illinois, shall take
9or cause to be taken a sample of blood of such woman at the
10time of the first examination, and a second sample of blood
11shall be taken or caused to be taken during the third trimester
12of pregnancy, between 27 and 32 weeks, to ensure treatment
13begins 30 days before delivery. These blood specimens shall be
14submitted to a laboratory approved by the Department of Public
15Health for a serological test for syphilis approved by the
16State Department of Public Health. In the event that any such
17blood test shall show a positive or doubtful result an
18additional test or tests shall be made. Such serological test
19or tests shall, upon request of any physician, be made free of
20charge by the State Department of Public Health or the Health
21Departments of cities, villages and incorporated towns
22maintaining laboratories for the testing of blood specimens of
23any woman who resides in that city, village or incorporated
