2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Matthew | ||||||
4 | Edward Ryan of Joliet, who passed away on September 13, 2010; | ||||||
5 | and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, From 2004 until his passing, Matthew Ryan served | ||||||
7 | as Chief of Staff for Will County Executive Larry Walsh; he | ||||||
8 | also worked closely with the Joliet Chamber of Commerce, the | ||||||
9 | Center for Economic Development, the Rialto Square Theatre, | ||||||
10 | Easter Seals, Cornerstone Services, the 911 Board, and the | ||||||
11 | Joliet Development Arsenal Authority; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Matthew Ryan became active in politics in his | ||||||
13 | teens when his uncle ran for city treasurer in Alton in 1972; | ||||||
14 | he managed his uncle's reelection as city treasurer in 1977; he | ||||||
15 | also helped develop the winning strategy for Paul Lenz's | ||||||
16 | reelection as Mayor of Alton after Lenz was disqualified from | ||||||
17 | the ballot because of petition deficiencies; at the time, the | ||||||
18 | election was one of the largest write-in victories for a city | ||||||
19 | of Alton's size; and

20 | WHEREAS, In 1980, Matthew Ryan served as an area | ||||||
21 | coordinator for David Robinson, who ran against Paul Findley | ||||||
22 | for the 20th Congressional seat; the campaign staff for the |

1 | Robinson team included David Wilhelm, Rahm Emanuel, and Forrest | ||||||
2 | Claypool; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, In 1982, Matthew Ryan joined Senate President Phil | ||||||
4 | Rock's staff; he was elected as President of the Illinois Young | ||||||
5 | Democrats in 1984; he managed the successful campaign of United | ||||||
6 | States Representative George Sangmeister in 1992; he signed on | ||||||
7 | with the Paul Vallas for Governor campaign as campaign manager | ||||||
8 | in 2001, with the State-wide campaign resulting in the closest | ||||||
9 | Democratic primary race in more than 25 years despite being | ||||||
10 | outspent 3-1 by an incumbent Democratic Congressman; and

11 | WHEREAS, Matthew Ryan and his wife, Angela Welsh, met at | ||||||
12 | the State capitol and were married in 1993; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Matthew Ryan is survived by his wife, Angela; his | ||||||
14 | parents, Robert and Mary Jane (Yenny) Ryan; his sisters, Susan | ||||||
15 | (Jim) Martin and Kathleen (Dave) Lang; and his nieces, Anne | ||||||
16 | Martin, Tess Martin, and Leslie Lang; therefore, be it
| ||||||
17 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
18 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
19 | mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of | ||||||
20 | Matthew Ryan; and be it further

21 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |

2 | sincere sympathy.
