HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize the 90th anniversary of the
4founding of St. Cornelius Catholic Church in Chicago; and
5 WHEREAS, St. Cornelius was established in 1925 by George
6Cardinal Mundelein as a parish for the Catholics of Jefferson
7Park on the northwest side of Chicago; the founding pastor was
8Monsignor Luke H. Lyons; and
9 WHEREAS, The parish was placed under the patronage of Saint
10Cornelius, a pope in the third century; he died in exile in
11253, and is honored as both a Pope and a martyr of the early
12Christian Church; his feast day is September 16; and
13 WHEREAS, The first Mass was celebrated in the completed
14church-school building in August of 1926; the school opened its
15doors in December of that same year; and
16 WHEREAS, Monsignor John R. Gleason began construction on
17the present day church building in 1964; and
18 WHEREAS, In March of 2016, St. Cornelius began to offer
19ethnic Masses for the Hispanic and Filipino communities on a
20monthly basis; and

1 WHEREAS, In June of 2016, St. Cornelius joined with Saint
2Pascal, Saint Tarcissus, and Our Lady of Victory to become the
3Pope Francis Global Academy, which opened its doors on August
422; therefore, be it
5 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
7recognize the 90th anniversary of the founding of St. Cornelius
8Catholic Church and we wish them many more wonderful years; and
9be it further
10 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11presented to the congregation at St. Cornelius as an expression
12of our esteem and respect.
