HOUSE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
Representatives wish to recognize the 90th anniversary of the
founding of St. Cornelius Catholic Church in Chicago; and
WHEREAS, St. Cornelius was established in 1925 by George
Cardinal Mundelein as a parish for the Catholics of Jefferson
Park on the northwest side of Chicago; the founding pastor was
Monsignor Luke H. Lyons; and
WHEREAS, The parish was placed under the patronage of Saint
Cornelius, a pope in the third century; he died in exile in
253, and is honored as both a Pope and a martyr of the early
Christian Church; his feast day is September 16; and
WHEREAS, The first Mass was celebrated in the completed
church-school building in August of 1926; the school opened its
doors in December of that same year; and
WHEREAS, Monsignor John R. Gleason began construction on
the present day church building in 1964; and
WHEREAS, In March of 2016, St. Cornelius began to offer
ethnic Masses for the Hispanic and Filipino communities on a
monthly basis; and

WHEREAS, In June of 2016, St. Cornelius joined with Saint
Pascal, Saint Tarcissus, and Our Lady of Victory to become the
Pope Francis Global Academy, which opened its doors on August
22; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
recognize the 90th anniversary of the founding of St. Cornelius
Catholic Church and we wish them many more wonderful years; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
presented to the congregation at St. Cornelius as an expression
of our esteem and respect.
