2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of
Edward R. | ||||||
4 | Abderholden of Antioch, who passed away on August 3, 2010; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Edward Abderholden grew up on the south side of | ||||||
6 | Chicago; he was the son of Edward and Ann (Yucik) with his | ||||||
7 | sister, Mary Ann Robeck; he married Dolores Raila on January | ||||||
8 | 29, 1950, at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin in Chicago; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Edward Abderholden graduated from Harper High | ||||||
10 | School and was the school's commanding officer for ROTC; he | ||||||
11 | attended the University of Illinois before entering the U.S. | ||||||
12 | Army, where he served as a 2nd lieutenant in post-World War II | ||||||
13 | Japan before being honorably discharged on April 1, 1953; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, After his father passed away, Edward Abderholden | ||||||
15 | returned from service in Japan and began pursuing his medical | ||||||
16 | career; he completed his undergraduate studies at Loyola | ||||||
17 | University and was accepted into the Stritch School of Medicine | ||||||
18 | at Loyola, where he graduated in 1956; he was a member of the | ||||||
19 | Century Club (1973) and an Alpha Sigma NU Honor Society member | ||||||
20 | (April 1951) at Loyola; he then interned and served general | ||||||
21 | surgery residency at St. Joseph's Hospital in Chicago; and

1 | WHEREAS, Edward Abderholden and his young family lived for | ||||||
2 | a time at the Mother of Cabrini subsidized housing projects | ||||||
3 | before moving to Antioch in 1958 and establishing the Orchard | ||||||
4 | Medical Center, S.C.; while there, he practiced pediatrics, | ||||||
5 | internal medicine, general surgery, and obstetrics/gynecology; | ||||||
6 | he had staff privileges at both St. Therese and Victory | ||||||
7 | Hospitals in Lake County and twice served as chief of staff at | ||||||
8 | St. Therese in 1993 and 1994; he was also the chief of staff at | ||||||
9 | Victory Hospital in 1973; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Edward Abderholden served as co-director at St. | ||||||
11 | Therese Hospital Star Hospice; while at St. Therese, he | ||||||
12 | received the Award of Merit in 1986, the Award of Appreciation | ||||||
13 | in 1993, and was honored for his years of service in 1997; he | ||||||
14 | served on the Barnell Clinic Board in 1970; he served as an | ||||||
15 | assistant professor at Chicago Medical School in North Chicago | ||||||
16 | in 1977 and was appointed to serve as clinical assistant | ||||||
17 | professor in 1995-1996; in 1976, he was appointed as a Life | ||||||
18 | member of the American Academy of Family Physicians; he served | ||||||
19 | on the A Safe Place Domestic Violence Task Force in Waukegan; | ||||||
20 | he also earned the Physician Recognition Award from The | ||||||
21 | American Medical Association for 1992-1995 and a certificate of | ||||||
22 | appreciation from The Lake County Lung Association in 1985; and
| ||||||
23 | WHEREAS, While he grew up in the city, Edward Abderholden | ||||||
24 | embraced the outdoors in Antioch and was an active hunter, |

| |||||||
1 | fisher, and camper; he was a member of Northern Illinois Ducks | ||||||
2 | Unlimited and Lake County Pheasants Forever; he was in his 50th | ||||||
3 | year as an Antioch Lions Club member and was honored with the | ||||||
4 | Melvin Jones Fellow award for humanitarian services in 2007; he | ||||||
5 | was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Antioch Rotary, | ||||||
6 | where he presented the "Medical Moment" joke at meetings; he | ||||||
7 | was made an honorary member of the Antioch Rescue Squad in | ||||||
8 | 1998; the Village of Antioch awarded him a certificate of | ||||||
9 | appreciation for service to citizens on July 3, 1997; he was a | ||||||
10 | part of Antioch High School's career education program, | ||||||
11 | introducing students to careers in the medical field; he served | ||||||
12 | as a basketball referee for St. Peters School after he | ||||||
13 | challenged a referee's call at a game and the referee suggested | ||||||
14 | he try being a referee; he was also the sideline physician for | ||||||
15 | football games at Antioch High School and part of the Ski | ||||||
16 | Patrol at Wilmot Mountain in Wisconsin; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Edward Abderholden enjoyed traveling with his | ||||||
18 | friends and family to such places as Lithuania, England, | ||||||
19 | Ireland, Kenya, Egypt, China, Japan, Hawaii, and the Galapagos | ||||||
20 | Islands; he was very fond of attending concerts, plays, | ||||||
21 | recitals, and sporting events that his grandchildren | ||||||
22 | participated in; and
| ||||||
23 | WHEREAS, Edward Abderholden was preceded in death by his | ||||||
24 | parents; his son, Mark; and his grandson, Christopher; and
|

| |||||||
1 | WHEREAS, Edward Abderholden is survived by his loving wife, | ||||||
2 | Dolores; his children and grandchildren, including Edward and | ||||||
3 | Lynn and their children, Ned, Lauren, and Brooke; Sue and Lee | ||||||
4 | (Keller) and their children, Ona and Eva; Frank and Sue and | ||||||
5 | their children, Elizabeth and Katherine; Jim and Linda | ||||||
6 | (Lambert) and their children, Blaise and Tyler; Mark and Anne | ||||||
7 | Marie and their children, Jeremy Lazar, Katharina, Alex, | ||||||
8 | Joanna, and Isabelle; and Guy and Juliann and their children, | ||||||
9 | Max, Sam, and Maggie; his brother-in-law, Dr. Frank Raila; and | ||||||
10 | his sister-in-law, Florence Lessner; therefore, be it
| ||||||
11 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
12 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
13 | mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Edward | ||||||
14 | R. Abderholden; and be it further
| ||||||
15 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
16 | presented to the family of Edward Abderholden as an expression | ||||||
17 | of our sympathy.
