2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to congratulate Pastor Joseph B. Gordon on | ||||||
4 | the occasion of his 20th anniversary in the ministry; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Pastor Joseph Gordon is a native of Detroit, | ||||||
6 | Michigan; he accepted his call to ministry at the age of 15; he | ||||||
7 | earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and | ||||||
8 | Communications from the University of Michigan and a Masters of | ||||||
9 | Divinity from the Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary at | ||||||
10 | Northwestern University in Evanston; he continued his studies | ||||||
11 | at the Institute of Church Administration and Management at the | ||||||
12 | Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia; he | ||||||
13 | also has an earned Doctor of Ministry degree in Prophetic | ||||||
14 | Preaching and Congregational Leadership from United | ||||||
15 | Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio; and

16 | WHEREAS, Prior to his service at Carter Temple, Pastor | ||||||
17 | Joseph Gordon served as senior pastor in four assignments in | ||||||
18 | Illinois and Michigan; through his leadership, there were | ||||||
19 | increases in stewardship, membership, and community | ||||||
20 | involvement; his passions are preaching, teaching and working | ||||||
21 | with civic and community leaders, health care issues, and other | ||||||
22 | concerns directly related to the African American experience | ||||||
23 | and the urban church; and

1 | WHEREAS, Pastor Joseph Gordon has been invited to serve as | ||||||
2 | a preacher, teacher, and revivalist across the United States | ||||||
3 | and was an inaugural presenter at the Styberg Preaching | ||||||
4 | Institute; he received the Styberg Award for excellence in | ||||||
5 | homiletics and the 2011 Outstanding Minister Award from the | ||||||
6 | Phillips School of Theology at the Interdenominational | ||||||
7 | Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia; he is also a three-time | ||||||
8 | recipient of the Spirit of Detroit Award; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Pastor Joseph Gordon served as a member of the | ||||||
10 | advisory board for Brothers and Sisters United against HIV/AIDS | ||||||
11 | in Illinois; he is the current Chairman of the Joint Board of | ||||||
12 | Finance of the Southeast Missouri, Illinois, and Wisconsin | ||||||
13 | Region and held the same position in the Michigan-Indiana | ||||||
14 | Region; he served on the Board of Directors for the Storehouse | ||||||
15 | of Hope, a church and non-profit collaborative in Detroit's | ||||||
16 | Northend neighborhood; he has been a public relations aide for | ||||||
17 | Congressman John Conyers, Jr., a community-faith liaison the | ||||||
18 | NAACP, an appointed member of Mayor Dave Bing's Detroit | ||||||
19 | Community Faith Initiative, a delegate to the General | ||||||
20 | Conference of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and the | ||||||
21 | Conference of National Black Churches, a founding member of the | ||||||
22 | Black Methodist Alliance of Detroit, president of the Detroit | ||||||
23 | District Ministerial Alliance, and a member of the | ||||||
24 | Pan-Methodist Commission; he currently serves on the National |

1 | Council of Churches, where he is a member of the | ||||||
2 | Intergenerational Think Tank; during his pastorate at St. | ||||||
3 | John's in Detroit, the Black Methodist Alliance held the first | ||||||
4 | annual BMA "One in the Spirit Revival" at St. John's Church, | ||||||
5 | the first of its kind in the nation; and

6 | WHEREAS, The congregation of Carter Temple will celebrate | ||||||
7 | Pastor Joseph Gordon's 20th anniversary in the ministry with a | ||||||
8 | Pastor's Appreciation and U.N.I.T.Y. Celebration on August 13 | ||||||
9 | and 14, 2016 at the Martinique Banquet Complex Grand Ballroom | ||||||
10 | in Burbank; therefore, be it

11 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
12 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
13 | congratulate Pastor Joseph B. Gordon on the occasion of his | ||||||
14 | 20th anniversary in the ministry and wish him continued success | ||||||
15 | and happiness in the future; and be it further

16 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
17 | presented to Pastor Joseph Gordon as a symbol of our esteem and | ||||||
18 | respect.
