| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to congratulate the schoolchildren of | ||||||
4 | Sangamon County on raising over $18,000 worth of pennies and | ||||||
5 | spare change over a period of two weeks in order to purchase | ||||||
6 | the Minute Book of Sangamon County; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, The penny drive was modeled after a similar | ||||||
8 | campaign from the early 1940s, when Illinois State Historical | ||||||
9 | Library Trustee Oliver Barrett asked schoolchildren from | ||||||
10 | around the state to raise money to buy the "Everett Copy," a | ||||||
11 | copy of the Gettysburg Address written by Abraham Lincoln | ||||||
12 | himself; the campaign was extremely successful and raised | ||||||
13 | $50,000; the Everett Copy now resides at the Abraham Lincoln | ||||||
14 | Presidential Library and Museum; and

15 | WHEREAS, As part of the Illinois Bicentennial, Sangamon | ||||||
16 | County schoolchildren were encouraged to donate pennies and | ||||||
17 | spare change as part of the "Illinois Proud Penny Drive" | ||||||
18 | campaign, which ran for two weeks from April 16, 2018 until | ||||||
19 | April 27, 2018, with a goal of $15,000; that goal was | ||||||
20 | surpassed, and $18,031 was raised; and

21 | WHEREAS, Proceeds from the Illinois Proud Penny drive will | ||||||
22 | be used to buy the Minute Book of the Sangamon County Circuit |

1 | Court from July 6, 1835 to July 7, 1838, which contains a | ||||||
2 | certification that formally admitted Abraham Lincoln to the | ||||||
3 | Illinois Bar and attested to his "good moral character"; in | ||||||
4 | addition, the book contains records of some of the earliest | ||||||
5 | cases with which Abraham Lincoln and his law partner, John Todd | ||||||
6 | Stuart, were involved; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, The penny drive was a true community effort, | ||||||
8 | involving not only children from more than 60 Sangamon County | ||||||
9 | schools, but also contributors such as the Sangamon County Bar | ||||||
10 | Association and Staab Funeral Homes, as well as partners | ||||||
11 | including the Bank of Springfield, Pease's at Bunn Gourmet, | ||||||
12 | Midwest Family Broadcasting, Looking for Lincoln, Springfield | ||||||
13 | Pepsi Bottling Company, Giganti & Giganti, Staff Carpet, | ||||||
14 | Midwest Office Supply, and the Illinois Bicentennial | ||||||
15 | Commission; and

16 | WHEREAS, Because of the efforts of these community partners | ||||||
17 | and the schoolchildren of Sangamon County, the Minute Book of | ||||||
18 | Sangamon County will be brought back to Mr. Lincoln's hometown | ||||||
19 | and displayed in the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum for | ||||||
20 | visitors to admire; therefore, be it

21 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
22 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
23 | congratulate the children of Sangamon County on their efforts |

1 | to bring this historic Lincoln artifact back to his hometown, | ||||||
2 | and we admire their hard work and dedication, as well as that | ||||||
3 | of the community, to make a meaningful impact out of spare | ||||||
4 | change; and be it further
