HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Shirley
4Mae Jackson-Higgins, who passed away on May 24, 2014; and
5 WHEREAS, Shirley Jackson-Higgins was born in Bell City,
6Missouri on February 3, 1943 to Willie J. and Rosie Lee
7Jackson; she attended South Mast School and graduated from Bell
8City High School; she was a member of Missionary Baptist
9Church, also in Bell City; she attended Southeast Missouri
10State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, graduated from
11Triton College in River Grove, and attended DePaul University;
12after relocating to Maywood, she was a member of First Baptist
13Church of Melrose Park; she married Albert on December 31,
141968; and
15 WHEREAS, Shirley Jackson-Higgins's work history is long
16and diverse beginning at Miles Square Medical Center of
17Chicago; after relocating to Maywood, she took the position of
18Account Administrator at Allied Van Lines; she also served as
19an Administrative Assistant to the Illinois General Assembly;
20later, she was employed by the Cook County Bureau of
21Technology; upon retirement, she served as Commissioner on the
22Maywood Housing Authority Board of Commissioners and was
23Executive Director of the Maywood Urban Revitalization

1Corporation; she was a member of The Way Back Inn Board of
2Directors and a member with the Maywood Chamber of Commerce;
3and
4 WHEREAS, Shirley Jackson-Higgins acquired numerous
5professional developmental certificates and accolades
6including the Operation Uplift Maywood Hometown Achievement
7Award, the Rosa Parks Heritage Award, and membership in the
8Northeastern University Phi Beta Kappa Academic Honor Society;
9and
10 WHEREAS, Shirley Jackson-Higgins was preceded in death by
11her parents; 2 brothers, Freddie Lee and J.W.; and 5 sisters,
12Barbara Jean, Jessie B., Virginia, Ruthie Jean, and Deborah
13Ann; and
14 WHEREAS, Shirley Jackson-Higgins is survived by her loving
15husband, Albert; her beloved son, Talbert; precious daughter,
16Angela Shirlene; beautiful grandchildren, Sydney Raymond and
17Taylor Gabrielle Rose; siblings, Willie Lee (Helen), Eddie Lee,
18Jerlean LeSure (Charles, deceased), Earnestine Pullen
19(Charles, deceased), Carl Lee (Loretta), Daniel Lee (Amelia),
20and Ceretha Brown (James, deceased); brother-in-law, J.W.
21Terry; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and
22friends; therefore, be it

2NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3we mourn the passing of Shirley Mae Jackson-Higgins, and extend
4our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who
5knew and loved her; and be it further
6 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Shirley Jackson-Higgins as an
8expression of our deepest sympathy.
