HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the members of Phi Beta
4Sigma Fraternity on the occasion of the organization's 100th
5anniversary; and
6 WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded at Howard
7University in Washington, D.C. on January 9, 1914 by 3 young
8African-American male students; the Founders, the Honorable A.
9Langston Taylor, the Honorable Leonard F. Morse, and the
10Honorable Charles I. Brown, wanted to organize a Greek letter
11fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of
12brotherhood, scholarship, and service and that viewed itself as
13a part of the general community rather than apart from the
14general community; and
15 WHEREAS, From its inception, the Founders of Phi Beta Sigma
16Fraternity also conceived the organization as a mechanism to
17deliver services to the general community; rather than gaining
18skills to be utilized exclusively for themselves and their
19immediate families, they held a deep conviction that they
20should return their newly acquired skills to the communities
21from which they had come; this deep conviction was mirrored in
22the Fraternity's motto, "Culture For Service and Service For
23Humanity"; and

1 WHEREAS, Members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity have been
2instrumental in the establishment of the Phi Beta Sigma
3National Foundation, the Phi Beta Sigma Federal Credit Union,
4and the Sigma Beta Club Foundation; Zeta Phi Beta Sorority,
5founded in 1920 with the assistance of Phi Beta Sigma, is the
6sister organization of the Fraternity; and
7 WHEREAS, In furtherance of its goals, Phi Beta Sigma
8Fraternity seeks to strengthen and proactively serve the
9brotherhood as a supportive resource that positively impacts
10the Fraternity's growth and financial solvency; reaffirm and
11maintain a strong commitment to brotherhood, scholarship, and
12service; ensure that Fraternity programs are focused and
13committed to serving humanity; create an environment that
14respects the dignity and worth of each brother; exhibit
15integrity and ethical behavior in conducting the Fraternity's
16business and serve as a model for all Greek-letter
17organizations; maintain and improve the Fraternity's
18technological literacy in order to better service its members
19and the community at large; foster and nurture its
20constitutional bond with Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.;
21encourage a closer and mutually beneficial working
22relationship with fellow Greek-letter organizations, other
23community service organizations, businesses, and governments;
24and select leaders who are committed and have demonstrated

1their ability to lead; and
2 WHEREAS, Today, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity has blossomed
3into an international organization of leaders; its members
4serve as models of hard work, integrity, and dedication for the
5people of the State of Illinois; therefore, be it
6 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8we congratulate the members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity on the
9occasion of the organization's 100th anniversary and wish them
10continued success and happiness in the future; and be it
11further
12 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity as a symbol of our
14esteem and respect.
