2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to recognize the life of McGlother "Mac" | ||||||
4 | Irvin, legendary Chicago basketball figure, who passed away on | ||||||
5 | December 24, 2011; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Mac Irvin was a basketball star at Tilden High | ||||||
7 | School in the late 1950s and then at St. Augustine's in | ||||||
8 | Raleigh, North Carolina; he worked as an executive for Xerox | ||||||
9 | Corporation until 1992, when he entered the club basketball | ||||||
10 | scene; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, A member of the Illinois High School Basketball | ||||||
12 | Hall of Fame, Mac Irvin was known as the "Godfather" throughout | ||||||
13 | the Chicago Basketball community; he ran the Mac Irvin Fire, a | ||||||
14 | Nike-sponsored team, which has consistently been one of the | ||||||
15 | nation's premier club programs; he had a vision that changed | ||||||
16 | the landscape of high school basketball; he was among the first | ||||||
17 | coaches to take Chicago players around the country to compete; | ||||||
18 | and

19 | WHEREAS, Mac Irvin coached several future NBA stars through | ||||||
20 | his summer camps and teams, including Kobe Bryant, Shawn | ||||||
21 | Marion, Shaquille O'Neal, Antoine Walker, and Tim Hardaway; | ||||||
22 | they were basketball stars, but he taught them about life; and

1 | WHEREAS, Mac Irvin created the Mac Irvin Foundation, which | ||||||
2 | assists at-risk youth; he was widely regarded for his | ||||||
3 | generosity to all children; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Mac Irving was a mentor, coach, and surrogate | ||||||
5 | father to the kids who came through the ranks of his amateur | ||||||
6 | basketball teams; he turned a small South Side basketball | ||||||
7 | program into one of the best in the country; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, at the time of his death, Mac Irvin was survived | ||||||
9 | by his wife, Louise; his mother; his brother, his children, | ||||||
10 | Byron, Lance, McGlother Jr., Mike, Nick, and Cynthia; and his | ||||||
11 | 11 grandchildren; therefore, be it

12 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
13 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
14 | recognize the life of McGlother "Mac" Irvin and extend our | ||||||
15 | sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew | ||||||
16 | and loved him; and be it further

17 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
18 | presented to the family of Mac Irvin as an expression of our | ||||||
19 | deepest sympathy.
