| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of DJ Sam | ||||||
| 4 | Chatman of Chicago; and | ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Sam Chatman, known as the "Godfather of | ||||||
| 6 | Steppin'", coined the term "Steppin'" to describe the popular | ||||||
| 7 | style of dancing on Chicago's South Side in the 1970s; and | ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Sam Chatman, through countless events, showcases, | ||||||
| 9 | and community gatherings, helped to shape, preserve, and | ||||||
| 10 | elevate a uniquely Chicago-born dance culture into an | ||||||
| 11 | international phenomenon; and | ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Sam Chatman possessed a mastery of music | ||||||
| 13 | selection, rhythm, and storytelling, crafting the soundtrack | ||||||
| 14 | for generations of steppers, social dancers, and music lovers; | ||||||
| 15 | and | ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, Sam Chatman's legacy was further solidified when | ||||||
| 17 | a street in the West Pullman neighborhood of Chicago was | ||||||
| 18 | dedicated in his honor in 2025; and | ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, Sam Chatman was a devoted husband, father, son, | ||||||
| 20 | and brother whose presence and wisdom deeply shaped his family | ||||||

| 1 | and his community; and | ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Sam Chatman will be remembered an iconic DJ whose | ||||||
| 3 | work transcended the turntables, serving as a cultural | ||||||
| 4 | steward, a teacher without a classroom, and a consistent force | ||||||
| 5 | for unity, elegance, and pride within the Black community; | ||||||
| 6 | therefore, be it | ||||||
| 7 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 8 | HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 9 | we mourn the passing of DJ Sam Chatman and extend our sincere | ||||||
| 10 | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
| 11 | him; and be it further | ||||||
| 12 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 13 | presented to the family of Sam Chatman as an expression of our | ||||||
| 14 | deepest sympathy. | ||||||
