HOUSE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
Representatives are pleased to recognize Arthur Canty
Elementary School on the anniversary of the adoption of its
name 65 years ago; and
WHEREAS, In 1927, Irvingwood School was established in
River Grove on West Addison; in 1935, the school moved to its
current location on North Panama in Chicago and the name was
changed to Grace Street School; in 1949, the school was renamed
in honor of Arthur E. Canty and it still bears the name today;
and
WHEREAS, Arthur E. Canty was an engineer/custodian in the
Henderson School for many years; he was a leader and held
numerous positions of trust, including President of the
International Union of Operating Engineers Local 143-143B,
Administrative Assistant to the Office of Civilian Defense for
the City of Chicago during World War II, and officer of the
American Legion; he served in the United States Army as a
Sergeant in France during World War I; and
WHEREAS, Arthur Canty Elementary School proudly serves the
far Northwest Side of Chicago; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
we recognize Arthur Canty Elementary School on the anniversary
of the adoption of its name 65 years ago in honor of Arthur E.
Canty; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
presented to Arthur Canty Elementary School.
