| 2 | WHEREAS, Corporal Alex Martinez, a United States Marine | ||||||
| 3 | Corps member, was killed in action while nobly serving his | ||||||
| 4 | country conducting combat operations in the Helmand Province, | ||||||
| 5 | Afghanistan; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Corporal Martinez was part of the 1st Combat | ||||||
| 7 | Engineer Battalion of the 1st Marine Division in Camp | ||||||
| 8 | Pendleton, California; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, Corporal Martinez was born and raised in Elgin, | ||||||
| 10 | where he attended Harriet Gifford Elementary, Abbott Middle | ||||||
| 11 | School, and Larkin High School; by the time he was a junior at | ||||||
| 12 | Larkin High School, he knew he wanted to be a Marine; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, His desire to serve his country stemmed from his | ||||||
| 14 | family history of service, as his father, Enrique Martinez, is | ||||||
| 15 | a longtime Navy reservist and his aunt served in the Army; and
| ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, Corporal Martinez married his high school | ||||||
| 17 | sweetheart, Julianna in 2008; and then graduated early from | ||||||
| 18 | high school in 2009; a few weeks after turning 18, Corporal | ||||||
| 19 | Martinez enlisted in the Marine Corps and left for boot camp | ||||||
| 20 | the next month; and

| 1 | WHEREAS, Corporal Martinez was on his second deployment to | ||||||
| 2 | Afghanistan when he was killed; and
| ||||||
| 3 | WHEREAS, Corporal Martinez hoped to start a family with his | ||||||
| 4 | wife as soon as he completed his service and dreamed of someday | ||||||
| 5 | becoming a firefighter; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, His faith was very important to Corporal Martinez, | ||||||
| 7 | who attended Life Changers International Church; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Corporal Alex Martinez is survived by his wife, | ||||||
| 9 | Julianna Martinez; his mother, Socorro Bethke; his father, | ||||||
| 10 | Enrique Martinez; and his siblings: Eileen Bethke, James | ||||||
| 11 | Bethke, Jenny Martinez, Brandon Martinez, Nicholas Martinez, | ||||||
| 12 | and Ilyana Martinez; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 13 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 14 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 15 | we mourn, along with his family, friends, and a grateful | ||||||
| 16 | nation, the passing of Corporal Alex Martinez; and be it | ||||||
| 17 | further

| 18 | RESOLVED, That we honor the memory of Corporal Alex | ||||||
| 19 | Martinez and his willingness to serve his country, which led to | ||||||
| 20 | him making the ultimate sacrifice; and be it further
