HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Mental illnesses, such as depression, bipolar
3 disorder, schizophrenia, and many others, can lead to suicide
4 attempts if left untreated; and
5 WHEREAS, Mental illness is recognized as a disorder of the
6 mind and body; if left undiagnosed, undertreated, or untreated,
7 mental illness increases the chances of an attempted or
8 successful suicide; and
9 WHEREAS, Many suicides are derived from depression and
10 other mental disorders, a substance abuse disorder, or a
11 combination of both; and
12 WHEREAS, The stigma associated with suicide is the result
13 of a lack of understanding of mental illness; and
14 WHEREAS, The survivors of suicide represent a large group
15 of people who suffer alone and in silence; and
16 WHEREAS, For every successful suicide, there are an
17 estimated minimum of 6 suicide survivors; and
18 WHEREAS, Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the
19 United States; therefore, be it

1 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
3 express our support for improved suicide awareness in the State
4 of Illinois in order to educate citizens about mental illness
5 and other disorders that can lead to suicide and successful
6 diagnoses and treatment of the underlying causes of suicide,
7 thereby increasing the numbers of survivors.
