HOUSE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
Representatives are pleased to congratulate Janice Guzon of
Hoffman Estates for winning the 2010 Prudential Spirit of
Community Award; and
WHEREAS, Janice Guzon is a 16-year old senior at St. Viator
High School; and
WHEREAS, Janice Guzon won the 2010 Prudential Spirit of
Community Award for her efforts with a charitable organization
that she founded out of her high school, EYEsee, which is
devoted to helping improve access to eyeglasses in
less-developed countries by collecting eyeglasses in North
America and delivering them to places where they are needed,
such as Latin America and Asia; and
WHEREAS, With the help of such partners as EyeCare WeCare
Foundation, Inc., Physicians for Peace, and Canvasback
Missions, Inc., EYEsee has helped 7,000 people receive
eyeglasses in Haiti, Honduras, the Philippines, Venezuela,
Congo, and several Pacific Island nations; the organization has
also set an ambitious goal to collect 14,000 pairs of
eyeglasses and deliver them overseas in 2010; and

WHEREAS, Janice Guzon was inspired to found EYEsee after
she was diagnosed with Type I diabetes at a young age; after
learning that blurred vision and other eyesight problems are
common side effects of diabetes, she was inspired to help
improve access to quality eye care to residents of countries
that did not have proper access to eye care and where a pair of
glasses would be prohibitively expensive to most people; and
WHEREAS, In addition to her efforts with EYEsee, Janice
Guzon is also active in other activities in her community; she
was the recipient of a regional award from the Coca-Cola
Scholars Program and is under consideration for a national
award as well; she serves as a Youth Board Advisor for the
Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a joint venture between
the Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association that
focuses on solving the epidemic of childhood obesity in the
United States; she also serves as the editor-in-chief for the
St. Viator High School newspaper, the Viator Voice; and
WHEREAS, Janice Guzon serves as a model of hard work,
integrity, and dedication for the people of the State of
Illinois; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
congratulate Janice Guzon for winning the 2010 Prudential

Spirit of Community Award and wish her continued success and
happiness in the future; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
presented to Janice Guzon as a symbol of our esteem and
