HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate Prairie Ridge High
4School's Advance Design students and their teacher Nick Low on
5their design work and model of the William G. Stratton Lock and
6Dam in McHenry; and
7 WHEREAS, Prairie Ridge High School is located in Crystal
8Lake; students at Prairie Ridge are offered electives in the
9area of industrial technologies, where they can enroll in
10courses such as mechanical and architectural design; these
11courses allow students to learn about CAD software, 3D
12printing, and design resources; and
13 WHEREAS, The students enrolled in Nick Low's Advance Design
14courses were able to apply their studies in the classroom to
15real world applications when the Fox River flooded in 2013; and
16 WHEREAS, In April and June of 2013, the Fox River flooded,
17with water levels rising to a level above what the William G.
18Stratton Lock and Dam could handle; the flooding that occurred
19in McHenry County hit Crystal Lake the hardest and caused an
20estimated $73 million in damages to multiple homes, businesses,
21and roads, with the floods effects being felt by everyone in
22the community; and

1 WHEREAS, Following the devastating floods, Illinois State
2Representative Barbara Wheeler sought education for homeowners
3about the lock and dam system's purpose and limits; hearing
4great things about Prairie Ridge High School's CAD and
5Engineering Program, she partnered with Nick Low's Advance
6Design students to work on a long term project to produce a
7physical model of the dam and lock using CAD software, 3D
8printing, and all of their knowledge from the past 2 or 3 years
9of engineering-related coursework; and
10 WHEREAS, The model of the Stratton Lock and Dam will help
11the Crystal Lake community and future students of Prairie Ridge
12understand the lock and dam system's function; therefore, be it
13 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
14NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
15we congratulate Prairie Ridge High School's Advance Design
16students and their teacher Nick Low on their modeling of the
17William G. Stratton Lock and Dam and wish them success in their
18future endeavors; and be it further
19 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
20presented to Prairie Ridge High School and Nick Low.
