| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Kate | ||||||
| 4 | Lane, who passed away on February 2, 2020; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Kate Lane was born in Memphis, Tennessee to Fred | ||||||
| 6 | and Gladys Peoples on April 12, 1937; she grew up in Memphis, | ||||||
| 7 | where she attended school and was a member of the Metropolitan | ||||||
| 8 | Baptist Church; she relocated to Chicago in 1953 and married | ||||||
| 9 | Glen Lane; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Kate Lane joined the Bethel Lutheran Church in | ||||||
| 11 | August of 1965; she was active with the Lutheran Church
Women | ||||||
| 12 | and served on the executive committee of the Synod Women's
| ||||||
| 13 | Organization; she joined the staff of Bethel New Life in 1979 | ||||||
| 14 | as coordinator of
housing initiatives and later director, where | ||||||
| 15 | she directed senior home repairs and
supervised the rehab of | ||||||
| 16 | the Monroe Leamington Cooperative
and other projects; and
| ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, Kate Lane was the "landlord" for former President | ||||||
| 18 | Jimmy
Carter and welcomed him and Roselyn to the soon-to-be | ||||||
| 19 | rehabbed Guyon
building while he was a part of the Habitat for | ||||||
| 20 | Humanity, building four homes
in cooperation with Bethel; her | ||||||
| 21 | largest project was the Beth-Anne Center
(former St. Anne | ||||||
| 22 | Hospital); and
| ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | WHEREAS, Kate Lane shared her culinary skills as the chief | ||||||
| 2 | cook for Bethel's Gumbo
Gala held in the Garfield Park | ||||||
| 3 | Conservatory; she also joined friend Mary Nelson in global | ||||||
| 4 | travel; they went to
Germany to visit Mary's family and gave | ||||||
| 5 | presentations on Bethel; she later traveled with Mary to | ||||||
| 6 | Tanzania, visiting Lutheran outposts and
communities; she also | ||||||
| 7 | traveled to Australia and Timor Lestea and shared
with rural | ||||||
| 8 | community leaders; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, Kate Lane retired from Bethel New
Life in 2004 and | ||||||
| 10 | shared her wisdom and conviviality from her home; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Kate Lane was preceded in death by her husband, | ||||||
| 12 | Glen; her parents, Fred and Gladys Peoples; her brother, | ||||||
| 13 | Clarence; her sisters, Alice and Nellie; her granddaughter, | ||||||
| 14 | Linda; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Kate Lane is survived by her children, Marcia | ||||||
| 16 | (Bernard), Ronald, and Linda; her sister, Barbara; her | ||||||
| 17 | grandchildren, Nathon (Kristen), Natalie, Glenda (Michael),
| ||||||
| 18 | and Tyrone; and her great-grandchildren, Naailah, Ariel, | ||||||
| 19 | Mikey,
Afawape, Ashanti, and Malik; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 20 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 21 | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||

| 1 | we mourn the passing of Kate Lane and extend our sincere | ||||||
| 2 | condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
| 3 | her; and be it further
| ||||||
| 4 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 5 | presented to the family of Kate Lane as an expression of our | ||||||
| 6 | deepest sympathy.
