HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate Myrtle Gerberding
4 of Elgin on the occasion of her 100th birthday, November 28,
5 2009; and
6 WHEREAS, Myrtle Spiegler Gerberding was born on November
7 28, 1909, in Elgin, the daughter of Frank and Martha (Nolting)
8 Spiegler; she married Carl E. Gerberding in 1976; Carl brought
9 Myrtle two children from a previous marriage, Lois Bendick of
10 Elgin and Bob Gerberding of Carol Stream, and they gave her
11 eight grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 11
12 great-great grandchildren (with one on the way) who all know
13 her as Grandma; and
14 WHEREAS, Myrtle was employed by the Home National Bank of
15 Elgin and by the City of Elgin for 34 years, where she served
16 as the first female City Clerk of Elgin from 1955 to 1967; and
17 WHEREAS, She designed the flag of the City of Elgin and
18 wrote and illustrated publications on Municipal Services; she
19 was an officer of the Illinois Society of Municipal Clerks;
20 Myrtle served on a Statewide committee in the creation of the
21 Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund and was a local
22 representative of the fund; and she was a Cooperative Observer

1 for the National Weather Service for 10 years; and
2 WHEREAS, Myrtle was valedictorian of the graduating class
3 of 1927 at Elgin High School; she was a member of the Faith
4 United Methodist Church and is now a member of First United
5 Methodist Church; she has been a member of United Methodist
6 Women, Church Women United, the White Collar Girls, Altrusa,
7 the Elgin Historical Society, and the YWCA, serving on the YWCA
8 Board of Directors, the Advisory Board, and the Advisory Board
9 of the Endowment Fund; and
10 WHEREAS, In 1969 Altrusa named her Woman of the Year; in
11 1993 the YWCA awarded her the Life Achievement Award, after
12 which the Elgin YWCA created the annual Myrtle Spiegler
13 Gerberding Award for public service; therefore, be it
14 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
16 congratulate Myrtle Gerberding on this momentous occasion and
17 wish her the best in all her future endeavors; and be it
18 further
19 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20 presented to Myrtle Gerberding as a symbol of our respect and
21 esteem.
