HOUSE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
Representatives are pleased to thank the workers of Waste
Management Inc. in Elgin for their hard work and diligence in
saving Old Glory from the trash; and
WHEREAS, All 26 drivers at Waste Management's Elgin
facility work together to pull flags from the trash; the idea
started about four years ago with two drivers who now work for
the company in other towns; and
WHEREAS, Representatives with the American Legion's
headquarters in Indianapolis, blame ignorance of federal code,
which says United States flags should be discarded in a
dignified manner, preferably by burning; boxes of flags in the
office fill up more before a big holiday, such as Memorial Day
or the 4th of July; some arrive torn to pieces, others are in
nearly perfect condition; and
WHEREAS, Since October of 2008, 304 flags have been
collected out of the garbage and donated to the American Legion
Post 57 in Elgin; the American Legion properly disposes of used
American flags, whether large or small; and
WHEREAS, The men and women of Waste Management Inc.

WHEREAS, Jeff Olson, a native of Canada, has dual
citizenship and pulls in more flags than any other Waste
Management worker; he was recently honored by the American
Legion in Elgin and the State of Illinois American Legion for
his efforts; and
WHEREAS, Working together, the men and women of Waste
Management Inc. have shown patriotism and pride in their
country and the flag through these efforts; therefore, be it

NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
thank Jeff Olson and the men and women of Waste Management Inc.
in Elgin for their hard work in saving Old Glory from the trash
and making sure that flags are disposed of in a proper manner;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
presented to the men and women of Waste Management Inc. in
Elgin as a symbol of our respect.
