HOUSE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Illinois House of Representatives wishes to
congratulate the owners of Old Fashioned Candies, Sandra
Figatner, Donna Greenwald, and Lynn White, on receiving the
35th Annual Charles E. Piper Award from the Berwyn Development
Corporation; and
WHEREAS, The Charles E. Piper Award is awarded annually to
individuals in recognition of their business achievements and
contribution to the economic vitality of the City of Berwyn;
and
WHEREAS, Old Fashioned Candies was founded in Chicago by
George and Theresa Brunslik in August, 1969; In 1976, the
company moved to Berwyn, where they are still proudly going
strong today; the family business has since been passed down to
the second generation, sisters Sandra, Lynn, and Donna, with
the third generation as part of the staff; and
WHEREAS, All Old Fashion Candies products are manufactured
out of the Berwyn location and sold at their two locations,
Berwyn and Indian Head Park; On August 13, 2019, Sandra, Lynn
and Donna celebrated 50 years of Old Fashioned Candies being in
business; and

WHEREAS, While leading busy personal and professional
lives, Sandra, Lynn, and Donna have always found time to
contribute to their community; Old Fashioned Candies
participates in Berwyn's Taste of Cermak and the Houby Day
Parade every year; every January, Old Fashioned Candies hosts a
Candlelight Bowl with 100 percent of the proceeds going to a
deserving recipient; Over $100,000 in proceeds has been donated
over the course of the event's 27 years; and
WHEREAS, The sisters and the rest of the Old Fashioned
Candies teams also collect and send supplies to the Fisher
House and local animal rescues, participate in Career Days at
the local schools and Berwyn's summer camp, donate to local
fire departments, honor the teachers at Morton West High School
for Teacher Appreciation Day with a chocolate fountain, provide
home cooked meals for individuals and families that come in
during the holidays, and donate and volunteer with United Way
and the Special Olympics; and
WHEREAS, Each year around Easter, Old Fashioned Candies
runs a raffle and donates Giant George, a 3-foot chocolate
rabbit, with all proceeds going to the Muscular Dystrophy
Association; every December, Mr. and Mrs. Claus visit Old
Fashioned Candies free of charge for anyone who wants to visit;
and

WHEREAS, Sandra Figatner is a graduate of Morton College;
she is the proud mother of two children and the wife of the
late William Figatner of longtime Berwyn business
Figatner-Scott Co.; Donna Greenwald is a proud mother of three
and grandmother of six; she recently retired from UPS after 31
years of service, while also working full-time at the candy
store; Lynn White is a proud mother of one and is the president
of her bowling league; she has five years under her belt as a
past PTA president and is in the PTA hall of fame; and
WHEREAS, The Old Fashioned Candies' doors are always open
to anybody that wants to stop in, chat, and sample some candy;
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
we congratulate Old Fashioned Candies on receiving the Charles
E. Piper Award; and be it further
RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
presented to Sandra Figatner, Donna Greenwald, and Lynn White
as an expression of our esteem and respect.
