1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, March is recognized as National Kidney Month, an | ||||||
3 | important opportunity to raise public awareness and | ||||||
4 | understanding of rare kidney diseases, such as Apolipoprotein | ||||||
5 | L1 (APOL1) mediated kidney disease; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, APOL1 genetic variants account for much of the | ||||||
7 | excess risk of chronic and end stage kidney disease for | ||||||
8 | persons of African ancestry, including people who identify as | ||||||
9 | African American, Afro Caribbean, and Latinx; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, APOL1 explains the disproportionate rate of | ||||||
11 | kidney disease in people of African ancestry; African | ||||||
12 | Americans make up 13% of the U.S. population but account for | ||||||
13 | 32% of all kidney failure and 35% of all end stage kidney | ||||||
14 | disease; in addition, African Americans are four times more | ||||||
15 | likely to develop kidney failure than white Americans; and

16 | WHEREAS, APOL1 mediated kidney disease is driven by | ||||||
17 | genetic factors and is underdiagnosed; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, APOL1 symptoms do not present until kidney damage | ||||||
19 | is advanced; symptoms include fatigue, swelling in the legs | ||||||
20 | and feet, and weight gain, among others; and

1 | WHEREAS, Increasing public awareness and understanding of | ||||||
2 | the genetic causes of rare kidney disease could lead to early | ||||||
3 | diagnosis and care for some of the most vulnerable populations | ||||||
4 | and empower and educate those at risk on how they can manage | ||||||
5 | it; therefore, be it

6 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
7 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
8 | we declare the month of March 2022 as Rare Kidney Disease | ||||||
9 | Awareness Month in the State of Illinois.
