HOUSE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
Representatives wish to recognize Angela McQueen and her act of
heroism that took place at Mattoon High School on the morning
of September 20, 2017; and
WHEREAS, As a student gunman opened fire inside the
cafeteria at Mattoon High school, fired multiple shots into a
crowd of students, and wounded one classmate, Angela McQueen
tackled the gunman as he continued to fire shots into the
ceiling; she held him down until the school resource officer
arrived and took him into custody; after the shooting, she
checked on and comforted other students; and
WHEREAS, Angela McQueen is an Illinois Native and graduated
from Marshall High School, where she was a standout basketball
player; she attended Eastern Illinois University, where she
earned a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics ad Physical Education
and her Master's Degree in Education Administration; and
WHEREAS, Angela McQueen became a teacher because she wanted
to make the world a better place; she has taught math and
physical education at Mattoon High School for over a decade;
she was part of a group of school staff members who started the
B.I.O.N.I.C. (Believe it or not I Care) program at the school,

which is sponsored by the local Rotary Club, and is a
service-learning program aimed at creating stronger
communities; she has also been part of the grief team at the
high school; and
WHEREAS, Lives were saved because of Angela McQueen's quick
response, courageous actions, and dedication to the safety of
her students; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
recognize and show our sincere gratitude for the heroic action
taken by Angela McQueen; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
presented to Angela McQueen as an expression of our esteem and
respect.
