HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) is a rare
3neurodegenerative disorder caused by the loss of certain cells
4in the brain and spinal cord resulting in the impairment of the
5body's involuntary functions, including blood pressure, heart
6rate, bladder function, and digestion; and
7 WHEREAS, Having formerly been called Shy-Drager Syndrome,
8MSA shares similar symptoms of Parkinson's disease, such as
9slowness of movement, muscle rigidity, and poor balance; and
10 WHEREAS, People who have MSA also frequently suffer from
11other involuntary functions of the body, including urinary and
12bowel dysfunction, sweating abnormalities, sleep disorders,
13difficulty controlling blood pressure, sexual dysfunction,
14cardiovascular problems, and psychiatric disturbances; and
15 WHEREAS, Some people are never accurately diagnosed with
16MSA due to its likeness to Parkinson's disease; and
17 WHEREAS, Though the progression of MSA varies from person
18to person, the condition never goes into remission, and is a
19progressive condition that in due course will lead to death;

1 WHEREAS, Early diagnosis and treatment of MSA is critical
2to managing symptoms and maintaining the best possible
3quality-of-life throughout a person's estimated 7-9 year life
4expectancy, pursuant to their diagnosis; and
5 WHEREAS, Increased awareness and exposure to MSA has
6inspired the nation's medical and scientific communities to
7engage in novel investigative research and treatment
8developments and assemble coalitions that serve patients and
9families through support, education, advocacy, and financial
10assistance; and
11 WHEREAS, The development of better treatments, and some
12day, a cure will help countless families avoid tremendous pain
13and loss; therefore, be it
14 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
15HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
16declare March of 2018 as MSA Awareness Month in the State of
17Illinois.
