1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate the members of the | ||||||
4 | Naperville Municipal Band as they celebrate the Band's 150th | ||||||
5 | anniversary; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, The Naperville Brass Band held its first formal | ||||||
7 | concert on July 4, 1859; the band appeared in stylish blue and | ||||||
8 | white uniforms and its concert was described in the Dupage | ||||||
9 | Sentinel as admirable; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, After the Civil War, the Naperville Brass Band was | ||||||
11 | re-organized and adopted
the name Naperville Light Guard Band; | ||||||
12 | the band played in celebration
of the Dupage county centennial | ||||||
13 | and consisted of some 14-20 members; the Naperville Light Guard | ||||||
14 | Band celebrated its 15th anniversary in Naperville
with a | ||||||
15 | concert in Court House square on July 4, 1882; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Due to financial hard times, the Light Guard Band | ||||||
17 | dissolved completely in 1900,
only to be resurrected in 1906 | ||||||
18 | with the financial sponsorship of the Kroehler Manufacturing | ||||||
19 | Company and renamed the Lounge Factory Band, bringing concerts | ||||||
20 | to Naperville until 1917; in 1917, the Band once again | ||||||
21 | underwent a name change to the Naperville City
Band when | ||||||
22 | Kroehler withdrew its support of the Band; and

1 | WHEREAS, In 1928, the State of Illinois granted a charter | ||||||
2 | to the Naperville Municipal Band
formalizing the name change, | ||||||
3 | and on April 22, 1931, a formal contract with the City of | ||||||
4 | Naperville, by vote of the Naperville citizens, established | ||||||
5 | permanent funding and committed the Band to 10 summer concerts | ||||||
6 | and 3 holiday parades or concerts; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, The Band has represented Naperville at national | ||||||
8 | music conventions in St. Louis
and Danville, Kentucky and was | ||||||
9 | awarded the prestigious Sudler Scroll from the
John Philip | ||||||
10 | Sousa Foundation for outstanding musicianship and for over 100 | ||||||
11 | years of history and service to the Naperville community and | ||||||
12 | school systems; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, In January of 2000, The United States House of | ||||||
14 | Representatives and the Library of
Congress designated the | ||||||
15 | Naperville Municipal Band as a Local Legacy
and presented the | ||||||
16 | award to Director Keller in Washington, D.C.; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, 2005 found the Band opening and dedicating its new | ||||||
18 | permanent home,
the Naperville Community Concert Center, after | ||||||
19 | raising some $250,000 to equip the new building approved by the | ||||||
20 | citizens and City Council of Naperville; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, The Naperville Municipal Band provides |

| |||||||
1 | scholarships to promising students of the city's band programs, | ||||||
2 | and its members offer leadership and example to inspire a | ||||||
3 | continuing stream of quality musicians for the Band itself; | ||||||
4 | therefore, be it
| ||||||
5 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
6 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
7 | congratulate the Naperville Municipal Band and its members for | ||||||
8 | its long history and dedication to bringing quality | ||||||
9 | entertainment to the community; and be it further
| ||||||
10 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
11 | presented to a representative of the Naperville Municipal Band | ||||||
12 | as a symbol of our respect.
