HOUSE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of retired
United States Army Colonel Charles J. Lucas of Grayslake, who
passed away on November 6, 2011; and
WHEREAS, He was born on May 21, 1923 in Mt. Carmel to
George J. Lucas and Myrtle Marie (Lovell); and
WHEREAS, He served in the United States Army during World
War II and was captured and became a prisoner of war at the
Battle of the Bulge; he later received the Purple Heart medal
for his service; he retired after serving for 35 years in the
Army and Army Reserve with the rank of Colonel; and
WHEREAS, He began a 41-year career in civil service in 1946
at Fort Sheridan as a Claims Adjudicator in the Separation
Center Finance Office; he later moved up to Section Chief and
to Post Signal Supply Officer, with later promotions to Deputy
Post Signal Officer and Signal Officer; and
WHEREAS, In 1962, he was selected as the Deputy Director of
Maintenance and was later promoted to Director of
Maintenance/Installation Maintenance Officer GM-13; he
culminated his career as the Executive Director/Chairman GM-14

of the Fort Sheridan Centennial Commission and Centennial U.S.
Constitution (1985-1988); and
WHEREAS, He was an athletic coach, musician, band director,
business entrepreneur, a long tenured member of the Grayslake
Village Trustees and Lake County Illinois Planning Commission,
a member of the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Charities
Board, American Legion Commander, a member of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars and Lake County Veterans Assistance Commission,
and he was Vice President of the U.S. Military National Reserve
Officers Association; and
WHEREAS, Charles J. Lucas Sr. is survived by his wife, Mary
Jane, his children, George J. Lucas II, Marilyn J. Lucas, and
Charles J. Lucas Jr.; his 5 grandchildren; and his 2
great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of
Charles Lucas; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
presented to the family of Charles Lucas as a symbol of our
sincere sympathy.
