| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of John | ||||||
| 4 | Thomas Merwin of Mokena, who passed away on September 21, 2017; | ||||||
| 5 | and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, John Merwin was born in Chicago on June 23, 1929; | ||||||
| 7 | he served in the United States Army in Korea and graduated from | ||||||
| 8 | the Illinois Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree | ||||||
| 9 | in mechanical engineering; he married Evelyn Joan Obarski on | ||||||
| 10 | May 24, 1953; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, John Merwin had a 42-year career with Commonwealth | ||||||
| 12 | Edison, where he held various technical and management | ||||||
| 13 | positions in fossil fuel plants and in construction of nuclear | ||||||
| 14 | power plants; he retired in 1990; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, John Merwin gave back to his community through | ||||||
| 16 | volunteer work, such as teaching driving skills for seniors for | ||||||
| 17 | the AARP, and preparing annual income taxes for seniors, both | ||||||
| 18 | activities through Senior Services of Will County; and
| ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, John Merwin always had time for his family, | ||||||
| 20 | whether it was grilling for them in the backyard or cheering | ||||||
| 21 | them on at sporting events; he enjoyed home construction, | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | woodworking, mastering the personal computer, and scale-model | ||||||
| 2 | auto and ship building; his family thought of him as a walking | ||||||
| 3 | encyclopedia and he always had his facts at hand; although he | ||||||
| 4 | was born on Chicago's south side, he became an avid Chicago | ||||||
| 5 | Cubs fan; he and his wife loved to travel, particularly to the | ||||||
| 6 | northeastern United States and Canadian Maritime Provinces; | ||||||
| 7 | and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, John Merwin was preceded in death by his wife, | ||||||
| 9 | Evelyn; his only brother; and his parents; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, John Merwin is survived by his children, Janice | ||||||
| 11 | (Steve) Brown, Sharon Merwin (Greg Spiess), Nancy | ||||||
| 12 | Krabbenhoeft, Michael Merwin, and Mary Beth (Ken) Kaczmarek; | ||||||
| 13 | his grandchildren, Nicolle (John) Glover, Noelle (Joe) | ||||||
| 14 | Appleman, Kevin (Nikki Lamba), Chris, and Nick Krabbenhoeft, | ||||||
| 15 | Carl (Nikki) Spiess, Elizabeth (CaHontas) Vincent, Jeffrey | ||||||
| 16 | Heaton, Tracy and Casey Merwin, and Nicole and Katelyn | ||||||
| 17 | Kaczmarek; and his great-grandchildren, Duncan and Rowan | ||||||

| 21 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 22 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
| 23 | mourn the passing of John Thomas Merwin, and extend our sincere | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
| 2 | him; and be it further
| ||||||
| 3 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 4 | presented to the family of John Merwin as an expression of our | ||||||
| 5 | deepest sympathy.
