1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives and State Representative Monique D. Davis | ||||||
4 | resolve to find proper solutions to the problems that face the | ||||||
5 | citizens of our State and the nation; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Recent studies by the National Health and | ||||||
7 | Nutrition Examination Survey suggest that an estimated 61 | ||||||
8 | percent of U.S. adults are currently overweight or obese; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, In addition to possible psychological | ||||||
10 | repercussions, obesity can lead to numerous health conditions, | ||||||
11 | including heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, | ||||||
12 | knee and joint problems, various types of cancer, and death; | ||||||
13 | 300,000 deaths each year in the United States are associated | ||||||
14 | with obesity; and

15 | WHEREAS, Studies from the University of New Hampshire have | ||||||
16 | found that 18 to 24 year olds are on the path toward chronic | ||||||
17 | health diseases; the studies found that, from a group of more | ||||||
18 | than 800 undergraduates, at least one-third of UNH students | ||||||
19 | were overweight or obese, 8 percent of men had metabolic | ||||||
20 | syndrome, 60 percent of men had high blood pressure, and more | ||||||
21 | than two-thirds of women were not meeting their nutritional | ||||||
22 | needs for iron, calcium, or folate; and

1 | WHEREAS, The prevalence rate of obesity in college students | ||||||
2 | has doubled over the past 10 years; the rise is partly | ||||||
3 | attributed to an increasing number of colleges and universities | ||||||
4 | contracting meals out to fast food chains, such as McDonald's, | ||||||
5 | Domino's Pizza, or Taco Bell; and

6 | WHEREAS, There is an absence of fresh and healthy food | ||||||
7 | choices at many universities in the United States and a lack of | ||||||
8 | understanding of how unhealthy food choices lead to health | ||||||
9 | problems; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, The United States government, like the Illinois | ||||||
11 | General Assembly, has a responsibility to provide for the | ||||||
12 | safety and welfare of the citizenry; therefore, be it
| ||||||
13 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
14 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
15 | urge the United States President and Congress to pass | ||||||
16 | legislation that would regulate the nutritional content of the | ||||||
17 | food that universities, particularly historically black | ||||||
18 | universities, offer to their students on campus in order to | ||||||
19 | decrease the nation's obesity problems; and be it further

20 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
21 | presented to President Barack Obama and the members of the |
