HOUSE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
Representatives wish to recognize the opening of the
cornerstone of the Yale Building in Durand on July 3, 2013; and
WHEREAS, The Yale Building was build in 1913 by James W.
Yale, a farmer who lived north of Durand, following a
devastating fire in the village in December of 1912; he was
determined to give Durand a business building worthy of the
village; and
WHEREAS, The cornerstone was laid in September of 1913 in a
copper box, hermetically sealed; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the years, the Yale Building was home
to a handful of grocery stores on the first floor and doctor
and dentist offices on the second floor; and
WHEREAS, The Yale Building has seen many changes throughout
the 100 years it has stood; from horse and buggies around the
center park to cars and from dirt roads to paved streets; 2 war
monuments have been dedicated to soldiers during the years, in
1920 and 1997; and
WHEREAS, The Yale Building is currently owned by Ken and

Sue (nee Gaffney) Gibler; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
we recognize the opening of the cornerstone of the Yale
Building on July 3, 2013; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
presented to the Village of Durand and to Ken and Sue Gibler as
an expression of our esteem and respect.
