1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Juneteenth recognizes the
abolition of slavery in | ||||||
3 | the United States and its territories
in 1865; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, President Lincoln enacted the Emancipation | ||||||
5 | Proclamation on January 1, 1863, freeing slaves throughout the | ||||||
6 | south, but it was not until June 19, 1865, over two years later | ||||||
7 | and over two months after General Robert E. Lee's surrender at | ||||||
8 | Appomattox Court House, that slaves in Galveston, Texas | ||||||
9 | received the news, making it the official end of slavery; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom from | ||||||
11 | bondage and oppression; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Springfield's Juneteenth celebration begins on | ||||||
13 | June 17, 2021 with the Levitt AMP Concert on the Y-block; on | ||||||
14 | June 18, Juneteenth, Inc. will partner with the Illinois State | ||||||
15 | Museum for a special art exhibit centered on Juneteenth titled | ||||||
16 | Noir; a patio party at the museum and a rally at the Capitol | ||||||
17 | will also be held that day; the Juneteenth Unity Parade and a | ||||||
18 | festival at Comer Cox Park will be held June 19; the four-day | ||||||
19 | celebration concludes with Fitness in the Park and an Outdoor | ||||||
20 | Revival; therefore, be it

21 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |

1 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
2 | we recognize the City of Springfield's Juneteenth celebration | ||||||
3 | as a time to reflect and to commemorate the end of slavery; and | ||||||
4 | be it further

5 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
6 | presented to the City of Springfield and Juneteenth, Inc. as a | ||||||
7 | symbol of our respect and esteem.
